N20 Turbo Oil Feed Line Dates (and general discussion)
Hey all quick question,
I'm sure most are aware of the known issue about N20s that the turbo oil feed line on some cars came without a valve that stopped oil supply to the turbo when the car was shut off, causing smoke on startup because there was oil in the turbo. I'm just curious when N20s started coming with the updated oil feed line. My build date is 12/18/2012 and MY13. I'm still deciding whether I'm being affected by the issue, but looking into it I'm curious about the dates. My car doesn't fall in this list https://bmwtechnician.com/2017/08/02...line-bulletin/ but I'm still not sure. Any input is appreciated.

Is the N26 affected as well or do all of them have the upgraded line set up?

The N26 was affected as well, or at least I've heard stories about N26's being affected on the forums. Not sure about the dates though, obviously

Build date of 06/2013 and I still had the old line. I ended up upgrading mine with the new turbo install but I never had issues even if the car had sat for a week.

Gotcha. So I'm definitely still rocking the old line Upon further review, no issues yet, just curious.

I assume it is relatively inexpensive to actually purchase, but it's not something I'd be able to do myself. From what I understand it requires complete removal of the turbo... So cheap part + lots of money in labor. As you can tell I'm kind of flip flopping on whether I'm affected or not, but hopefully if it does need replacing the dealer will do it under warranty despite my mod list...
I had a fried start the car for me after about 24hrs of not running and not an inkling of smoke. But then today, I started it up after what was probably 20 hrs, and I was in the car so I couldn't see well, but I definitely saw some smoke in the side mirror after startup, say 60 seconds after, when I started backing out of my parking spot... I'm also not on the recall list nor do I fall within the VINs on the bulletin, but if Bunker didn't have the revised part and his build date is later than mine, it's likely I don't either.

I'd only be concerned if you get some heavier, bluish-tinted smoke and it's consistent. That or you have the oil levels dropping.

I've looked around and haven't found a definitive answer to this question so: if there is oil in the turbo and one is affected by the oil feed line issue, is it something that needs to be immediately addressed? i.e. how serious of an issue is it? I've read that some people with white smoke had to get the turbo replaced because it was the turbo itself that was having problems not the oil feed line. I wouldn't think the motor would be at risk but probably the turbo if it was the oil feed line. I wouldn't be mad per se, if I [I]had/I] to upgrade to an MHI or something , but at the same time I don't want my turbo to die, even less so my engine.
