Rear Tyre Widths

Daft question I'm sure, but my 330D has 225/45/18s front and rear.

The MOT noted that the rears are close to the limit so it's time for a change and as the 225s look quite stretched, is it a straight fit to go to 255/40/18 (as per the door sticker and many websites based on my reg)?

TIA

Ian

Depends on the width of the rear wheels.

If you take the wheel off, it'll have stamped on the inside (something like) 18" x 8J (possibly 8.5J).

If 8J, then 255 is really a bit too big to be safe. If it's 8.5 then you should be fine

My 330d has 225/45/18 fronts (8J) and 255/40/18 Rear (8.5J) on standard M Sport alloys.

I will be putting 245/40/18 on the rear when the tyres need replacing though, simply because they’re cheaper and fit the 8.5J even better.

Potentially a previous owner has had 225's fitted on the rear to save a few quid.

Although some models of 330d had 225s all around. Any SE, Luxury or Modern on 18s were in this state as standard.

Mine is a Lux, so that might explain it. Still hoping the rear wheel is wide enough for 255.

You must have an 8.5J rim for a 255/40 R18 tyre. Fitting on an 8J rim, you'll be outside ETRTO and DIN standards.

This^
Although you could still fit a 245/40/18 on the rear safely with an 8J rim. These are generally cheaper than the 255 as well.
