rim width

Hello all. 1st post for me. Just bought a 2017 440 with m performance package (exhaust and brakes). Learning as much as I can, as quick as I can. I need to order winter wheels and tires asap ( I am in eastern Canada). Stock set up is 255 35 19 on back with 8.5" rims 47 offset, Front is 225 40 19 with 8" rim 36 offset. Car currently has spacers but for winter, I would prefer to get the wheels back inside the fender as they are when stock to diminish the amount of crap the wheel is throwing at the car. I am looking at a few different Canadian online tire sites that come up with 8.5" rim for front and 9.5 width for rear when I put in car model. Can't find a wheel on these sites that comes in an 8" and 8.5. Any suggestions? I am thinking on going 8.5 all around..........

Just doing some more reading on this site. Will 18 inch rims fit over the M Sport (blue) brake calipers?

For winter tires I would go 8 in wheels wrapped in 225 all around (and whatever sidewall is needed to match original overall diameter).

18 inch BMW wheels will fit over the Brembo calipers, yes

Stock 18" rims will fit the painted calipers not all aftermarket 18" rims will.

OK. I think I will go with 18 inch rims. I may still go with staggered fitment. I was on a site (1010tire.com) that guarantees fitment. What I have done up now is 225 45 18 on 8 inch et30 for front and 255 40 18 on 9 inch et40 on rear .... still researching though. I will take the wheel spacers off for the winter that are on with the stock rims right now.

Any reason you suggested going with 225's on 8 inch all round?

For added rotatability and thus lifespan and to have the same contact patch all around. A wider tire is going to have less surface pressure than a narrower tire. So in the winter when you're most likely to encounter (EDIT: when you're DEFINITELY going to encounter, being in PEI) snow and ice, a narrower tire will give you better traction.

In that same vein, fitting a wider tire to the rear is going to make rear end more prone to losing traction, inducing oversteer easier. I don't remember if you said your car is AWD or RWD (it would be worse for RWD since it would also make it more difficult to get the car to accelerate at all) but in either case that's not something you want to happen in normal winter driving conditions.

And as for why 8 inch: 225s fit perfectly on an 8 inch rim (can fit up to 245, some people have stretched 255s on them) and they'd save you a bit of money, too

Thanks. That is very helpful. Our car is idrive (AWD). It is our 2nd vehicle so our truck does the grunt work in the heavy weather. We won't drive it a lot in the snow - they use a crapload of salt here - so mostly dealing with wet roads. I may not have a choice but to go with 225 45 18 all around. I am having trouble on the tire sites finding the same model tire in a 255 40 18 and a 225 45 18.

How will the 225's on 8" inch rims look on the rear as far as offset goes. Will the outside edge be in the same spot as the 8.5 et47 stock?

btw - am I on the right forum. I noticed this says F30 and I have an F36?

You might be pretty limited but I was able to find Winter Sottozero 3 in both those sizes on Tire Rack (Albeit I entered my old Vancouver postal code so availability is probably different across the country).

I think the offset difference is 13 mm between the 8 and 8.5" rim (what I found said the 8 inch rim is et34), so the outer edge should be in the same location relative to the fender.

Yep! This is the forum for all F3x vehicles

In addition to the other comments already provided talking about traction and how a narrower tire is better in snow, another advantage is this is a stock size for the F3X platform in some trims.

If 1010Tires is like Tirerack they should have a decent selection of 18x8 wheels that fit and 225/45/18 winter tires. I run an aftermarket set up in those sizes which clear my M Sport brakes. Not by much, but they clear.

late update .... I went with a 19 inch rim.... 8 inches wide front and back (225 40 19) The rims look great. First winter with this car and the traction and handling in snow (less than 2 inches) is phenomenal. I prefer driving it than my Nissan Armada . Except when plows are taken off the road - then it is back to the truck!
