BM3 Risks

Have a 2013 335 (n55) touching about 80k miles (no warranty) and was thinking about getting a BM3 for it to get burbles and a little extra power but wanted to know the risks related to it. Have seen some saying I can just kill the car but others say if you do it right nothing will happen?

The OTS tune is totally safe provided your car is well maintained, has no underlying problems, and is not abused. People go well beyond 100k miles with tuned cars, including those with upgraded turbos/making much more power than stock.

The burden will be on you to make sure the car is maintained, you datalog to make sure everything is working correctly, have supporting mods, and dont abuse the car regardless of whether it is tuned or not.

You do not need a cold air intake for stage 1. You will be better off leaving the car stock so as not to introduce multiple variables to troubleshoot in case you are having issues.

You are better off putting in fresh spark plugs. Leave them stock and don’t go 1 step colder. If they and still original, replace the coils too. Install and drive for a few hundred miles to make sure you have no issues before tuning if you can.

Charge pipe - replace the charge pipe! A CAI will increase turbo sound, which is nice, but a drop-in filter will likely do the same thing (in terms of power). My car is almost identical to yours, except RWD, no X-Drive. An OTS tune won't do any damage to your engine, but I can't stress the need to replace your charge pipe, enough. They crack without a tune, now imagine pushing more air through there! At 80k miles, if the prior owner hasn't had it replaced once, then it's about to go.

As stated above, intake isnt a power mod, nor is it a prerequisite for any tune. TBH i recommend you do some more research if you think you need an intake for an OTS tune to make sure you are fully informed about hardware mods needed for each stage of tune. And as noted above only change one variable at a time. Maintenance is key, including preventative.

Burbles are not really "friendly" to the engine or turbo. If you are looking for a less risky solution, that wouldn't be what I'd be enabling.

Ah missed that in OP. Yeah definitely keep stock burbles. You can flash the tunes and not change the burbles.

sound advice, one variable change at a time.

I went with a JB+ for 2 years on my n20 f30 and then recently moved to a dinansport. During my time with the JB+ i did no other mods.

After the dinansport and a month i changed spark plugs and coils (60K service item). I then installed an eventuri cold air intake and am very, very happy with the results.
