Still feels so sluggish compared to the 340i petrol though. Loads of torque is good but you need decent bhp to go with it.

Putting some distance between the petrol and diesel? or maybe the diesel does not meet emissions targets at higher powers?
Perhaps the equipment needed for the bi-turbo diesel engine to pass emissions tests does limit the power. I noticed today reading a review of the new Alpina D5 with this engine that it only has 322bhp, which is down on what the previius D5 and current D3 puts out. They're still doing 700NM of toque though. Can't think of any other reason...

In fact it says at the bottom of that article that uk one is the lower powered biturbo one.

I assume the reason the D5 S is only getting the Bi-turbo engine is due to the right hand drive version lacking space for the extra turbo and larger manifold?

I guess you'd assume the 340d will have the same B57 engine as fitted to the 7 series. Over 500 lb⋅ft.........

Current N57 335d has 630 N⋅m (460 lb⋅ft)

It's all speculation. We won't know until it happens. Until that time enjoy whatever you are driving. I certainly love my 435d as it hits the spot.

And a hefty amount of torque. Given this is built on the same CLAR platform as the G20 will be then there should be no technical reason why the same engine isn't offered - no doubt it will be a political one.

Interesting it has slightly more power than the 740d but same torque!

Notice it says it's just what some unheard of Spanish website 'purports' to be the full engine line up! So basically has little to no relevance.

True but the rest of the thread is speculation too and this makes reasonable sense, i.e., the big diesel is not getting more powerful but the petrol is. Can see what my next car will be though especially if you can boost the 380 bhp up further

Yes the M340i could be an absolute beast! Even the M240i can be easily bumped up from 340bhp to 415bhp with a £175 tuning box! So could see 455bhp or more from M340i!

The bad news will be the cost, both list price and road tax.

How much do we think these M Performance models will be? £45k or more?

Then £450 a year road tax.

Then if you buy the M340d you'll have to put that Adblue shit in.

Big power gaps between the 330 and 340i and with 325 and 340d.

No 330d or 335d to fill that gap or 335i for example.

If, and I do mean 'IF' BMW limit the mid range 6-cylinder engines, I see this as possibly part of manufacturer's trying to achieve compliance with the ever tightening emissions/CO2 targets.

If drivers really want a bigger engine, then make a decent variant, load the spec' (and cost) to satisfy those who must have the 6-cylinder motors.

£45k is alright, if it already comes with a lot of options, my 335d was over £49k with options!
