Brakes again..

Hi all,

I know this has been asked before and apologies if asking again annoys people, yes I know how to use the search function but I don't want to.

My pads are due for replacing in around 1000 miles so would like to get them ordered and replaced. I don't know what make discs I have but would like a decent set of pads, mostly normal driving but occasionally have a good B road blast. I have the standard brakes and have been looking on Autodoc but there are so many options.

Could someone point me towards a decent set that would fit and do I need the accessory kit and wear sensor?

Thanks

I've fitted the correct OEM BMW pads to my 370/345mm set up with OEM grooved/dimpled discs and so far they've been brilliant

Not stupidly dusty; great braking from the off, no noise etc and would highly recommend them

OEM pads are made by Jurid; but they are a different compound to what you buy aftermarket, made by Jurid.

Cheapest prices were via Douglas Park BMW on eBay; part numbers via RealOEM

However, personally I don't and never have just fitted pads; always replaced discs & pads together so they bed in perfectly and there's no uneven wear etc

If I were to go aftermarket (if my F31 didn't have BMW warranty as it does); I'd have fitted ATE Ceramic pads via Autodoc and would highly recommend them also

Ran them on all my previous E39s and they're superb; little to no dust and superb braking / superb bite etc

Thanks for the reply Dan, I had a feeling you would be first. As always good amount of information. Would you recommend pairing the ATE pads with ATE discs.

Will also check out realOEM and Douglas apark

Try putting your VIN into RealOEM (link above) this will give you the parts required for your car, then cross reference with Autodoc or carpartsonline (same company). Good prices but not the quickest to dispatch.

Thanks, currently looking on RealOEM. Idrive is saying I have over 1k miles before replacing so I have plenty of time to order from autodoc

ATE, Textar, TRW, Jurid and Galfer (I think) are the OEM makers of BMW discs, Brembo make the calipers on some, ATE the others. But they don't make discs or pads

Re ATE; again they're what I've always run; but wanted the grooved/dimpled set up on my F31, so stuck with OEM this time round, more so due to the warranty...

But for blank discs I'd go ATE as they're properly coated (Jurid, TRW and Textar are but they seem to corrode quite quickly) and I'd pair with ATE pads; their Ceramic pads ideally...

I ran them with ATE Powerdiscs on my E39s and they were belting...

Which brakes do you have (standard, M Sport or M Performance)?

I'm running standard brakes. I'm leaning towards the ATE pads / discs. Just looked at RealOEM/ ebay and BMW parts are £120 for the pads and £200 for discs ( not sure if that's per single or a pair )

That's not a bad price really... That's a pair too FYI

If you use TopCashBack you'll get 4% cash back for eBay motors and Nectar points too

ATE discs are £77 on Autodoc and Ceramic pads appear to be around £110 for the front set... So not a huge amount in it.

But with Autodoc you need to order sooner rather than later as their delivery times aren't the best...

You could try Cotswolds BMW too and see what forum discount they can offer. Sometimes they'll better some eBay prices!

OK, that's not too bad than for a pair. As a man who has experience with both which would you go for if warranty wasn't a factor. As said before general driving and the occasional B road blast?

ATE blanks, ATE ceramic pads, ATE wear sensor - Autodoc via their app will give you the best price too

Think they've got an offer on currently if you subscribe, so worth looking

Thanks Dan,

I'll go with the ATE set up then. I'll post an update once fitted and used

You'll not go wrong pal; they're decent brakes... Give them a good bedding in and then a few hundred miles or so and they'll be spot on

If you're fitting them; use this on the lip of the hub but nowhere else; all mating surfaces should be absolutely cleaned to within an inch of their life, but with nothing else added

Will probably get them fitted at my garage, without going off topic I'm running spacers and have been advised against putting stuff on the hubs

Yup; best way.

Mating surfaces need to be absolutely spotless. a) stops any wobbles and b) allows for correct heat dissipation etc

Just bought the ATE discs, pads and sensor from Autodoc, all in at £225, including delivery and the safe return option. Put it all in my basket yesterday, checked it today and 41% discount had been applied to discs and sensor so went ahead with purchase.

Yep, ATE pads and discs all round on mine a couple of weeks ago.

Whilst I did buy in the anti-rattle kits, pins, wear sensors etc, in reality they weren't needed. You only need the wear sensors if you gorilla the old ones off and break them in the process.

I also used Liqui-Moly ceramic paste on the pads (sliding and piston sides) as the Blue brakes are notorious for squealing.

It's also important to wire wheel all the old baked on dirt and dust off the caliper carriers, otherwise the inboard pads can bind, which will give you a mushy pedal and uneven pad/disc wear.

Did you get the Ceramic pads? Whats your opinion? Have you done any hard braking?

No just the standard ones. I wanted as like for like OEM as possible. Yep, I have done hard braking. Not 'emergency' braking as the discs and pads are only 500 miles old and don't want to overheat them just yet, but no issues. Very strong stopping power.

Parcel arrived from Autodoc today, exactly 7 days from ordering to delivery. I thought I would be waiting longer so very pleased with that. Just need to get booked in for fitting now

I've had these ATE pads and discs fitted for a few hundred miles now. Huge improvement on whatever was fitted before, more positive feel from the pedal and adds confidence when driving. Would recommend for standard brake calipers

Ah wish I had stumbled across these recommendations before I ordered Brembo pads for my blue front brakes! The ATE ceramic pads sound great even if they are over double the price.
