420d Exhaust Advice

Hi all,

I know there are hundreds of threads about this but I haven't been able to get my answer I'm afraid!

I'm looking to convert the single 'pea-shooter' exhaust on my pre LCI F32 420d to a twin, similar to a 435d. Now I've been in contact with a exhaust specialist and I've been told this won't be possible? The backbox apparently will need to come off and just a pipe will be run, thus meaning I'll have a backbox delete?

I'm not keen on the idea and would like a second opinion. All I'm wanting done is the tips to be changed (no noise or performance gains), apparently there is not enough room under the car to fit this and this is the only solution. Has anyone else done this change and can advise how to go about doing it?

Questions I have;
- Can I fit a backbox off a 435d onto my 420d and be done with it?
- Are the tips bigger on a 435d compared to a 430d?
- Is it possible to just change the tips on my car?
- Can anyone recommend an exhaust specialist in the South/West London area? Can travel if the job is going to be right as I don't want a mess to be made of my car!
- How much should I expect to pay for something like this? Was quoted £210 today for this work.

TIA.

I see no technical reason it can't be done, or that it should be horribly expensive to accomplish. The 325d / 425d (which on the F3x series is the same 2.0 engine, but twin-turbocharged) came with twin exhaust pipes, as do the post-LCI 320d/420d cars.

Different tailpipe / back box, different diffuser.

Garage List
The twin tips were fitted to the 420D at LCI so look for a 420D LCI back box with these on and get a twin exit diffuser to go with it for the proper oem look/job there's bound to be a few of these for sale as a lot of owners go for the duel (one on each side) style as per the 440

Cheers for the help guys, I'm going to go elsewhere and have a chat as well. The specialist I spoke to was Powerflow so will be worth going to another exhaust place and seeing what they say. I have already bought a diffuser from a 430d so no worries there, it's just the actual exhaust I need fixed now.

The original M Performance accessory tail pipe trim I'm not a fan of. I don't like the look of the thin tailpipes and would rather go something like the original with thicker tips.

Does anyone know of any decent exhaust specialists around London?

I would have thought Powerflow would be able to do what you were looking for? You should be able to get a single outlet on each side or the twin on one side quite easily but it will mean cutting your existing system. When I had a 2009 E60 520d, I had a twin outlet exhaust trim fitted by these guys in Romford, not too far from East London. It was fitted by them when the car was about 3 days old and it was fine in the 4 years I had it. Someone local bought the car and I last saw it about a year ago and the trim is still on there (after about 9 years!)

This is what I had, it wasn’t quite the same as the 530i / 530d style it was a bit beefier looking, almost like the 550i

The guy I took it to at Powerflow definitely said it can be done, it would just mean that he would delete my backbox and put a pipe in its place as there isn't enough space for a bend underneath. I don't see what the issue is though, I'm only wanting tips changed so surely it can be changed like above except with different tips?

The tips you've linked are exactly what I want! OEM look, nothing aftermarket.

Thought that, not keen on the idea of having a backbox delete on my car. It'll cause me all sorts of problems come MOT time and selling time as well, not to mention the stupidity of having a backbox delete on a 420d.

I'll try a different Powerflow branch and see what they have to say. Also going to try Profusion if anyone's used them before?
