Has my rear door gasket shrunk?

Hi all,

New to me 2014 F31, and it looks like the gasket around the rear doors is too short. It doesn't go all the way to the lower edge, and leaves a gap as a result. Both sides are the same. Is this normal?

Not sure why the pics are rotated, or how to fix.

You should post a picture of the back door on the other side for comparison...

This differs from my F31 and appears to be abnormal.

No easy answers. Looks like it has to be replaced. I wonder if BMW has even addressed the issue for new parts.

That's what I'm wondering as well, if there has been an improvement to the part or am I putting a new one on to have it happen again.

I may pull that section off and see if it will stretch after being warmed up with a heat gun.

You might just consider cutting off the end piece that is supposed to tuck under the car and try to find some piece of weather stripping that looks as similar to that rubber strip as you can find. You might get lucky and find something close enough if you look around hard enough. A good rubber cement will join the pieces.

You might also just consider taking it to a specialty shop that works with older cars where parts aren't made anymore. It might be cheaper and ultimately more effective to have it repaired rather than replaced with another shrinking seal.

Just to update, I fixed it. The seal can be released on the inside of the door, but will still be in a channel on the outside of the door. This did allow good access to warm up both sides of it with a heat gun. I stretched it until it was in place and used automotive adhesive to keep it there. I held it in place with painters tape while the adhesive cured.

Hopefully it will last through the winter cold and remain permanent.
