Rookie mistake: stripped lug bolt

I f*&#-ed up. In the process of removing one of my wheels, I somehow forgot "lefty-loosey, righty-tighty" and over tightened the lug bolts on one of my wheels instead of loosening them. All 5 were to some degree of stripped.

  • 2 of the 5 were successfully removed and replaced with new spares I had on hand, torqued to spec
  • 3 of the 5 are still stuck on the wheel. I cant remove them as the socket will slip even on a short 14" breaker bar.

Without a doubt the 3 need to be replaced and I'm planning on taking it to a nearby reputable indy ASAP. But in the mean time, what's the safety risk those 3 bolts pose for driving?

I drove it around the block and didnt notice any vibration either.

awww captainnnnn

since they're hella tight driving on them is fine. fixing it in timely manner is prudent as you wouldn't want to have a tire problem, such as flat in a bad area.

Probably have to get the closest lower SAE socket to 17mm like a 5/8" socket and hammer that bad boy into the bolt

Shouldn't be too big a deal…

Find a shop with a set of these and they will get you sorted out in no time.

+1 on this. Was looking up ways to get rid of a stripped lug bolt and the extractor bolt came up. Frustrating part is stores only carry up to 16mm.

I'd try to DIY it, but given above and hesitancy to screw it up even more, I'm inclined to let a shop handle the 3 bolts.

Local indy shop replaced the 3 remaining bolts. Broke one of their extractor tools in the process, but was able to get them all out. Thanks for the replies!
