Accidentally blew clear coat off.

Yesterday, I bought a 1600 PSI electric pressure washer and got too close to the paint (apparently). This has never been an issue with my Honda and I've actually cleaned this car with a more powerful washer.

For the pros— Does this look like a defect or was I just careless? I bought the car CPO, and to my understanding, the bumper cover was never repainted. Is there a fix to this other than repainting?

It might have been a good sign though. The previous owner brushed against some curbs, so I was going to look into getting the whole cover replaced/repaired and then repainted.

What are my options here? Is this defective? Do people constantly have this issue? What's a good price to have this repaired and repainted versus just replaced and repainted?

Thanks.

Just my two cents but this wouldn't happen on a factory painted bumper. This area was most likely repainted.

I've seen OEM paint do this but it's generally been on older cars where the car use to sit out in the sun for long periods of time.

100% correct. Then again I put 1750psi on my "CPO refreshed" front bumper and no issues. That's just shitty paint and clearcoat

Thanks guys. Unfortunately, that's what I assumed was going on. Looks like I'll be getting it repainted. What's the best way to going about that?

All jokes aside, go to your dealer and ask who reconditions their CPO bumpers. Typically good bmw dealerships have their own internal paint shop or they have a close-by certified shop. Can't go wrong. The LB is a tricky color to shoot I've heard. Spend the money

I did something similar on my old EB car, near the front grilles - got it smart repaired at my local BMW dealer for £130; did a great job actually, and very hard to see once done

I know how you feel as I was gutted when I did mine - for me I got too close and got under a stone chip which pulled the surrounding area of the lacquer off

Hope you get it sorted

I called the BMW dealer and got their bodyshops number. I'm at a different one now getting an estimate.

Thanks for all the replies!

looks like there was a rock chip or something like that, the pressure could have hit the chip the wrong way and peeled back the clear. Its unlucky, but seems like you're okay with a repaint which would probably be the best bet. best of luck!

Should a factory bumper do this? It was right on the rock chip, but I'm trying to determine if this was repainted. How can I tell? I went to Heppners and they said it would be $900 to fix. I asked what a new bumper would cost and that rang up as $850. ECS tuning sells them for $550 though, so are they trying to screw me?

I'm going to try the place that my local dealership uses.

not likely, but also not impossible. Id bet the bumper was sprayed once before but cant be certain. an OEM bumper is probably around $850, guessing the ECS one is a good rep? Get a few quotes from reputable body shops by you, its not worth replacing the entire bumper for the paint unless there is other damage. Bad luck, hopefully this works out for you.

ECS, if OEM, is unpainted. Only primer.

With aftermarket EB pre-painted Bumper, lots of luck getting a match to the Factory paint.
