Nothing listed in the car's status menu. But wondering if I should take it in anyway as I'm taking a long trip this weekend and don't want this to occur on the highway. Edit: decided to make an appt. for tomorrow and see if anything was logged. Last edited by snowghost; 01-08-2013 at 04:23 PM.. |

Aux Cooling Fan
So I drop the car off today and explain to the SA about the fan perhaps being the culprit. She says she's not heard of this issue and asks another SA about it. He says the same.
I had mentioned it's a "known issue" on the Forums, whereupon she snidely tells me the Forums are a dangerous place. Well, I just got a call from her and they are ordering a new auxiliary cooling fan as that's what kicked me into Limp Mode. Hmmm, dangerous???

It must have logged something on the ECU. I can verify when I pick it up tomorrow.

This limp mode happened to me for the first time tonight....car wouldn't rev over 3k rpm and when I stopped had the loud fan noise. I just hit 1000 on the odo. My car is also a 335i msport. Had no error message on the dash or idrive. Happens again and I guess I'll bring it in.

I have also experienced this issue similarly. I have an August 2012 build 335 m Sport.
The first appearance was a little over a month and a half ago with the loss of power issue. Was on a highway on ramp when it happened, so it kind of put me in danger since i could barely get it up to highway speed. I pulled off at the next exit, checked the vehicle status in the iDrive menu, and noticed how high the fan in the engine area seemed to be running so shut the car off. After a minute it calmed down, so i tried to turn it back on, and it acted like nothing ever happened. There was no check control shown during or after this happened, but it hasnt felt the same since. Pretty much exactly how Cfichman's video depicts: . I didnt feel any steering wheel vibration as ybbiz34 pointed out though. I did let my SA know about this, but I didnt make much effort to bring it in because as justinnum1 said, i have also found that unless you can bring it in with the problem, its likely a waste of time. The loss of power happened to me again about 2 weeks ago in a different way, still going on an onramp again though, except this time it didnt really go into "limp mode", it just felt like it had less HP available or something. I didnt hear the loud fan or anything like before, but it was like this little Mazda 3 just zipped around me like my acceleration was weak (not cool). I brought in after that, additionally because I have also been noticing that she just seems to pegging 160 line for the oil temp, even after 15 to 20 miles on the highway. Heat doesnt really blow out the whole time either, even though its on max 84. Sometimes it does get to a little over 200, but that will be after alot of stop and go at traffic lights. I was hoping there would be some codes stored somewhere outside of the vehicle status view we have access to, but unfortunately they couldnt find anything wrong. Now yesterday while driving home i noticed the Check Engine Light come on. Im like WTF, already?? No power loss or anything like that, just cruising, temp pegged at 160, kind of freezing my behind off on the way home, and this happens. But this could be a good thing because I pulled off and took it to autozone and had it scanned. They found a P0128 code, which apparently points to cooling/thermostat/fan/temperature sensor issues, so same suspected areas everyone has been pointing to. I havent driven it since it happened, but the light is staying on when turning the car on and off, so im going to bring it in again with this proof, and hope to start getting some traction on solving this problem. |

My car just doesn't feel the same after that limp mode incident. It feels generally weaker now. Going to bring it in tomorrow for a checkup. I'll let you know how it goes.

I then did a second run with the air on (heat, 84 driver and pass), where the oil temp gauge started at 205 (shut it off for 10 min in between). The heat was actually working as i pulled off, nice and warm....but then the strange part was that after about 10 miles, the temp gauge was at 190, and the heat wasnt coming out as warm. Then after about 25 miles the gauge was at 175, and the air was coming out slightly chilly! Its like the engine temp was being robbed by the internal air. It stayed at 175 until the end of the 50 mile drive, and the air never rose above that chillness again. The kicker is that at the end when i was on the streets to go home, if I was at a stop light idling long enough, the heat would start to show signs of life intermittently even though the oil guage still never budged. Go figure. |

I will post what our dealer finds, if anything, once we get our car back. BTW, I am new to this forum but not new to BMW. I really appreciate forums such as these to learn and share our experiences about "The Ultimate Driving Machine." Bob

When I brought it in, I went on a drive with the shop forman and he said they would run some fan diagnostics and it's been a common problem among the new 3 series. Also, on an unrelated issue. He said someone had come in with a bad rust problem under the passenger seat too. I don't know what they plan to do about it though. |

BMWNA has contacted me twice since then, the first time to tell me the seat pans have been ordered. The second time to see if they were installed. They have not arrived yet. I will post the results when they are replaced.

Is this limp problem happening with only 335 M sports or are other lines/makes experiencing it also?

It was fairly chilly (37F-40F) with the oil temp just under 250 the whole way.
