Good Luck incorporating the Canbus to control the electronics. But it will all be custom made. Car is too new and way too expensive to start with to have anyone do any swaps. GL OP!

N55 or B58 should not be too bad as canbus is already there in the ECU. BUt you will def need to do some wiring/ pin changing and coding/ adaption will need to be done.

It will be better, easier and cheaper to buy 335i or 340i.

Are you sentimental about your 328i that you rather transplant another engine instead of just upgrade to a higher spec 3er as others suggested?

Well it’s my commuter. I have 117k on it and climbing 60 miles every day. I figure if I found a bmw parting out because it’s totalled and find a motor for about $4k how hard it would be to do it. From what I’ve read the n20 seems pretty reliable however it’s a bmw .

Then OP mean, replace the old n20 with a fresh or remanufactured n20? |

Hey OP, did you know you could buy a Porsche 918 and be quicker than engine swapping your car?
Focusing on your actual question, 2nd reply to the thread hit it on the head. N55 with the associated DME would be your easiest option (leaving the N20 out of it). I'd assume with a similar year, so long as you can get your CAS to accept the DME and sync with it, you'd be fine. I'd be a little more wary of a B58 swap as all components in the chain with CAS would be different and may not accept each other. That'd call for you to pull either the same parts associated with it or at least the same parts that are virginized and then initiate a sync. It definitely won't be fun but if you have the time/money and are really wanting that over a new car or new N20 engine, then go for it.
