Any iPhones that don't overheat when wireless charging & Carplay?

I have a new company iPhone SE 2020. My car is coming up to 3 years old and as I don't like the G80 I'm sticking with my F80 for a good while... So my plan was to stop using BMW Nav and use Waze (plus I binned my Snooper as it was obsolete so needed something else to keep me updated on hazardous locations ). My first long journey in ages and I found that isn't going to work - after around an hour the phone shutdown as it overheated. I also found running it not charging drained the battery in around an hour too. I don't know if it just Waze but guessing all these map apps with live updates are going to be pretty heavy on the battery. Wireless charging in the armrest is also going to cause a lot of heat build up so I get why this would happen - I only have it in a thin rubber case. Appreciate the solution is probably to plug the phone in via USB and not keep in the armrest but that is kind of the point of it!

Does anyone use an iPhone successfuly like this - is it just the SE2020 or just Waze? Interested in what others use as I'm planning on getting another phone soon but would want it to be an iPhone...

My 11 Pro sits quite happily in the wireless charging tray and manages to charge without heating up significantly, despite using a phone case. I'm not a regular Waze user, but have done the odd longish trip while using it, without problems.

I do notice that it's quite fussy about positioning in the tray if I want it to charge, but that's the only quirk.

My iPhone X has a thinish case and does warm up when charging and using Waze, but never overheats.

I had an iphone 11 pro and now a 12 pro max - and neither had that issue with carplay while on the charging mat. Both in cheapo ebay rubber cases - frequently go West Mids to london - so 2hr+ journeys.

They get warm - but not as hot as when i use my fast charger at home.

However i mainly use googlemaps and not waze.

I have only used CarPlay when connected via USB and have never had an overheating issue as you describe... Including using Waze...

When I tried out the system in the F40 1 series, I noted that BMW connect CarPlay now using WiFi... Don't know if this is a factor or not (were you ever able to connect using Bluetooth only?)... I think you can connect via USB also, on the 1-er's system...

I've had this when using CarPlay GPS with wireless charging - I have an Apple Silicone case so not a 3rd party item.

I don't bother with wireless charging much now.

Not an iPhone but my Note 9 got very hot using the wireless charger in my 1 series but my journey was less than an hour so it didn’t overheat. I reckon it would have though.

Also a 30minute run using Waze wirelessly took the battery in my phone from 70% to around 30% so it eats the battery in this mode. I’ve just bought a USB C connector and if needing it on a longer journey will probably connect via this

I also found my iPhone 11 got worryingly hot on a long journey. It was only playing music though so didn't overheat entirely. It has put me off using the wireless charging though.

My galaxy s20 also gets very hot I found on the pad and running waze wirelessly in the m340 so still the same issue in the g series. I noticed the battery killer as well so good shout using a cable, shame as defeats the object of having it.

Interestingly, I have a Seat Leon on rental until the 1 series turns up... I used its wireless charging and bluetooth/wifi CarPlay set up with Waze the other day and after an hour or so the phone stopped charging and was quite hot.. I swapped to a cable and did not have another problem...

I will not have the wifi charging mat in the new BMW as it is an element hit by the semiconductor shortage... On the experience of the Seat, I don't think I will miss it..!

Only thing to add though - i find using carplay without being charged makes my 12max pro get quite warm - and the battery takes a serious hit - so without a wireless on longer drivers you will need to plug it in.
