Cool 335D Remap .... or TDI-tuning

Hey guys,

I have been looking through some old threads back from 2017 regarding remaps.
Many people were speaking about DMS doing their remap.
I am also aware of Evolve in Luton.
I'm in Nottingham and i don't mind travelling to the right person.

Car is on a 65 and still under used warranty with 54K . I am aware that the majority of reputable places offer a remap well within tolerances and there are also plenty of " local dealer/technicians " which come under a national company which probably have limited knowledge of cars and simply flash the ECU with whatever they are given.

TDI-tuning currently have their bluetooth compatible module which offers 7 selectable driving modes via the app which seems convenient... However a previous thread also rips them apart.

Anyone have any suggestions, experiences both good and bad..

Thanks in advance

Each to their own, and if you have a dig around the forum there is threads arguing the toss about this no end.

But IMO, a remap from the likes of DMS or Evolve is the way to go... If for nothing else they'll carry about a pre and post dyno run. The pre along with an inspection highlighting any potential issues which may need addressing prior to tuning as well as setting benchmark figures, and then post showing what has actually been achieved.

As for a tuning box besides all of the potential negatives no doubt you've read. Why 7 interchangeable maps via Bluetooth... Sounds like a novelty which will soon wear thin to me. Why 7 ?! Surely 3 settings (Off, Economy and Max power) would suffice.

I know what you mean about the 7 settings, it’s almost like you get 6 more to use after the error occurs in the first one!

I do like the idea of pre tuned results and inspection.

Thanks for shouting up

My 330D has been running a DMS remap for the last 50+K miles without any issues.

Independently verified dyno runs show the power and torque as 345-347bhp and 500-525lbft.

Evolve has also been raising its game and has posted similar results.

Good ECU piggyback units, i.e. 3 or 4 channel, have also shown to give good results but I'd only buy the best units. There are some crudely operating units on the market.

Piggyback units can be removed for servicing but may still be traceable. DMS will de-remap the car for three years (without charge) for servicing or if the map is wiped by the dealer as part of a software update.

Whichever route you choose the 30/35D units respond very well to tuning. Spending on your current setup you may need to also consider brakes, tyres and suspension to get the best out of the car.

Remap is always better so long as its a good one. I ran an E-Maps 350bhp/700nm tune on my 535d for 90k+ miles without any issues at all. The remap will make a wider range of changes compared to a tuning box which basically fools the ECU into overboosting and over fuelling by telling it that the boost pressure is lower than it actually is. PLUS your dash shown mpg etc will likely all be inaccurate with a 'box.

Kind of resurrecting this thread, as I'm trapped with the same dilemna

Paid to get a remote remap from Evolve, but my ECU software is too old to be read, so I'm back to the drawing board (driving there isn't an option sadly as I'm 2 hours away and can't afford to take a day off)

Reconsidering the tuning boxes (partly to try and avoid any warranty issues) but I know from experience years ago that they arent the same and simply overfuel/overboost/etc.

Seen positive comments for Unicorn, who aren't too far away - any other suggestions?
(yes - I have used search - lots!)

I've not been to Unicorn Motor Developments (my 330d was remapped elsewhere) but I did have a long chat with Rick, plus some email correspondence, and he came across as very knowledgeable.

From what I've read Unicorn has a good reputation. Worth getting in touch.

I fully recommend Rick at unicorn and have used him since the early days before he had his rolling road. he's tuned b5 RS4 for me and my golf R and recently my f31 335d and you won't find a more knowledgeable guy when it comes to recalibration skills.

+1 Travelled well out of my way to have my 435d remapped by Rick. No complaints only a recommendation to go and see him.

I am getting my 2016 435d xdrive remapped by GKR Performance this week, they are too far for me so a local agent is going to read the engine map in it's standard form, a map will be made and on the second visit map put on and tested.
No dyno for this option unfortunately but if I am curious I know of one or two in the area to do a run on.

Try quantum tuning. Very very reputable and their maps are great. Been using them for over 2years,supplied over 25cars so far, none have came back with problems
