Confirmation from Asda I didn't missfuel the car! So leads my back to timing chain then.

I just thought it would've got progressively worse rather than fine one night then gone the next morning!

I just sent the video to my lad to listen to. He's a BMW tech but no longer at BMW... His 1st thought was timing chain. Then changed his mind to a misfire. Obviously guesswork from the short video, but it's going to be something other than just oil/filter related. It needs looking at properly.

First, good to read it hasn't been mis-fuelled.

I've just re-listened (on a better pair of speakers) and I'm not sure what is going on. There is definitely a smooth running issue, so could be off-beat due to an injector problem. Not really hearing the typical chain noise.

Agree it requires a closer look... by someone who knows these engines first-hand.

Another thought, as the engine appears to smooth out with a few added revs. Could possibly be the vibration damper/front pulley. Listen more closely to where the noise/vibration is coming from. More to the front, or rear? (Damper is at the front, chain at the rear).

FYI I don't think it's possible to miss fuel our cars. There's two pins that have to be depressed to open the flap at the top of the fuel filler neck. Petrol nozzles are to thin hence the flap will not open.

It did run smooth at 70 on the drive home, injector would be cheaper! Going to try and get some time this week to get it to a BMW specialist

Was just hoping I could get a difinative "It's X" as I worry someone will tell me oh it's XYZ and pull my pants down a bit!

I appreciate everyone's help on this! Even though it had an oil change on Sunday I checked the dipstick last night (all be it engine was stone cold as I haven't started it since that video) and it was just over minimum so going to chuck in another litre tonight. Wont make a difference mind you but piece of mind and all that!

Didn't I read earlier in this thread that when you did the oil change you topped it off to both the dipstick and the Idrive? If so, where has 4 litres of oil gone in the meantime? If I am indeed remembering incorrectly, then why didn't you fill it up to max on the oil change? Either way, why is your oil so low? Please don't just go throwing a litre of oil in it based on a cold dipstick check, if you over fill it, you will potentially do tremendous damage.

I don't mean this in a harsh way at all, but reading between the lines of some of your comments on this thread, I would just leave it well alone until you have had someone check it properly. It is evident you are not the most clued up person with cars so best to just leave it well alone.

As I said, I don't mean that harshly at all, I just don't want to see you cause more issues and expense by throwing ideas at it. You cant measure your oil accurately as you cant start your engine, so don't go by a cold read in the meantime.

I hope you take that as intended :-)

I checked it when it was warm last time and it was perfectly in between min and max (unsure as to why it wasn't showing as full as 5l went in on the change) did the iDrive one and it was showing about 3/4 full. I never trust the iDrive. I checked under the car and around the drain plug, around the filter etc over the weekend and can't see any signs of leakage. I presume as the oil warms up it would naturally sit higher on the dipstick anyway?

By no means is it harsh, I am clueless beyond certain realms. I like to learn what is going on though, which is why it probably comes across as more as I double cross things to make sure I have the best understanding.

As said going to try risk it and get it to the specialist this week. Be a shame if it goes but it's a risk I will take, if it goes pop I have to take it on the chin really!

lol, no, I didn't mean it like that, more that let someone else diagnose it as it stands who REALLY knows what they are talking about. Not that you are totally clueless, and I admire your desire to discover what is going on. Just don't want to see you do more harm than good on guesses.

I'm no mechanic myself, but am pretty confident to tackle most serviceable jobs myself, and I wouldn't touch it or do anything unless it was blatantly obvious what the issue was, and I don't think it is.

Saying that, if your oil is VERY low, this could be the issue with the noise, especially considering the underlying factor of the recent oil change. However, it doesn't explain where the oil has gone.

I too always use the dipstick in addition to the idrive, but I always measure what I took out and replace it like for like and then check on both that it is topped off to max.

If there is no evidence of leakage, I am at a loss as to where the oil has gone and how 5litres only gave you a half fill. I know my N47 only takes 5 litres to brim it. A 30l variant only takes 6l, so why was yours only half full at 5l ?

Nah I get it honestly. I know forums have all levels of skills. I just like to learn and try to understand the way things work, so probably selfish of me and naive to be asking so much. I just try to get an understanding myself really.

I am also now questioning the loss off oil. I will have another look around and see if there is deffo no look and fully remove any covers underneath. Things like this I don't mind doing.

But will deffo get it to a specialist this week, needs must now. Hopefully not the chain and deal with it as and when! Spotted a Discovery 4 I liked too at weekend Always bad timing!

If you are in between the min/max marks on the dipstick, oil isn't the issue.

May not be exactly the 'perfect' level, but in the working range. You only need 1 litre for a top up 'min - max'. Don't overfill... check again with a warm engine.

I'm not sure how you're thinking 4 litres has gone. The difference between the min and max marks on the dipstick is 1 litre. Max indicating that no more oil should be added. On the n47 engines therefore if the oil level is on Min then the quantity of oil in the sump will be 4 litres give or take (and a few hundred mils in the filter).

I wasn't aware of that, so thanks, but it still remains that his oil level has dropped from between midway to min overnight. Not as drastic as the 4l I said, but still strange if the readings are accurate, but probably the one taken cold isn't tbf

There will be variation according to the time taken, (hot/cold/warm, time for drain back), and whether the car is in the exact same parking place. Doesn't take much of a slope to also give false readings.

Agree, just a slight incline can make it look overfilled or underfilled depending which way the car is facing.

Just a quick thought.
Did you remove the engine acoustic cover?
I refitted one incorrectly on my previous 123D. It rattled horribly I thought the engine was going to blow up.
It was quite fiddly to fit and if it didn’t slide into one of the guides correctly it was very noisy.
Try pulling the cover off then start it with it removed.

I thought that initially that it might of worked it's way lose but I took it full off and it still sounded the same. It's going in tomorrow! If I actually get time, poor things just been sat there!
