I'm also interested in knowing this! I'm trying to decide if i should change the software of my f22 220i so that i could get 270 hp.
Also is there any mechanical differences between the 20i and the 28i versions of the engine?

270 is not a problem. With the right fuel it's capable of easily reaching 330/350 hp. Sometimes even more. But at that power level, reliability may be a concern, specially considering the 20is run way leaner than the 28is. Also, on the 20is ignition advance curve is steeper. +15 degrees is common.

No differences besides compression ratio depending on the country the car is sold.

Dear all,

I'm actually doing a master in Automotive Engineering and I've a project about this engine (N20B20) in a 328i.

I'm working on the oil system, which is really interesting with its variable geometry oil pump.

Does anyone has more information about the oil system on this engine ? (Brand of the oil pump, flowrate, pressure, ...)

I've already checked the service information manual, but some informations are missing.

Also, if you have a CAD model of this engine (or just some oil system parts), let me know.

Thanking you in advance for you help.

I found some decent information on the difference of the N26 compared to the N20 engine, being that more and more engines are now going the the N26 setup for emissions.
I know there is a lot of talk about the N26 HC air filter, and catalytic convertors.

Click the picture of the engine, and it opens the link to the N20.

n20

Thanks Jason for the link on the N20 information. I am a former Mercedes Benz Tech . I have worked on some BMW but what I have just experience with a 2013 X3 with this N20 with the timing chain is just as bad as the Mercedes 272 engine failure. The top guide breaks and breaks a piece of the cylinder head off where it is attached and the same at the bottom and damages the block. I swapped out the Engine myself now I got to read this manual and figure out why I get crank and no start:

Great, thank you for this publication. This will be something which will take my attention for a next few nights. On Saturday I will bring 328i F31 and I am little bit nervous, what I will do when some possible problem will show up with this car. Of course I am not expecting nothing, but I saw few posts and discussions here and I am little bit scared.

Engine covers

Hi. I have a 2013 320i. There is an area on the top right of the engine bay which has a lot of exposed wires. Im trying to see if there is a cover available for it. I noticed this jumble of exposed wires last week and i dont like the looks of it. see picture attached.

I believe the PN you are looking for is 12528616568

It is compatible with many models, including yours.
