Can I safely run my car without my MAF plugged in?
Car is tuned MultiMap Stage 2 (Bootmod3) with all the supporting mods (FMIC, Chgargepipe, Turbo Inlet, MPPK Intake, Fabspeed High Flow Catted Downpipe, AWE midpipe + catback exhaust).
Can I safely run the car without my MAF plugged in? I currently have it out and took it around the block. It runs 10x better than it ever has. Idles smooth and a bog during my cold start went away. Don't want to do any more driving if this puts me at risk. The CEL comes on with the MAF out as well. Would there be a fix or would I just have to deal with it? All and any information would be appreciated! |

Unplugging the MAF is sometimes used to diagnose/test an underlying issue, which is sounds like you have if the car runs better with it unplugged. Running with it unplugged long term is not a solution. You can try cleaning the MAF and plugging it back in (use the special cleaner, CRC i think?), and go from there.

Why do you say it wouldn’t be a long term solution? What does it actually control on a tuned car? I had this issue about two years ago and replacing my MAF sensor solved it. When it popped up again, I replaced the old MAF sensor with another new one (Freeee from FCP Euro) but nothing changed. I’m thinking it’s maybe the plug/harness that actually plugs into the back of the MAF sensor that went bad. See my attached pictures? How do I even go about replacing this lol is it going to cost me big? Might be the wires or might just be the plug. Not sure yet but I do know unplugging everything solves it. |

You can get a custom tune to go MAF-less, but OTS maps or even normal custom tunes do not do that. Running without the MAF is going to make the car rely on O2 sensor fuel trims, since it will have no idea how much air is coming into the engine, it's going to be more 'reactive'.
You can try cleaning the connections with electrical cleaner. if you had a harness issue it would probably show much as a code. |

Not really sure what else could be causing me an issue or where to turn then.
MAF Sensor (ruled out) due to replacement. Harness (ruled out) as you say it would throw a code. Unplugging the MAF sensor and driving makes the car run better than ever. |

I don't really see any mods that would cause the maf to make it drive bad. Do you have a voltage meter to check the harness connectors ?

Have you tried resetting adaptations like fuel trims, etc, upon replacing the MAF? I can't remember all of them that the MAF affects, but at a minimum it would be STFTs and LTFTs from what i remember. It might be worth just resetting all and seeing if it has any effect (all does not include transmission adaptations, BTW).
