what is the exact spec for pre-LCI 428i N20 engine oil capacity ?

Hi, I searched and looked up google and came up with different answers for such a simple question. For my 2014 BMW 428i, a typical 2L N20 motor, what is the exact engine oil capacity ? I found online answers anywhere from 6.5L to 5L, my owner manual just says goto BMW dealer and get ripped off. Screw that, I'm doing the engine oil change myself. Anyone know the exact answer can please help me out, much thanks.

I always use OEM when dealing with the oil filter. Ive used K&N air filters before but never oil filters. As long as it fits properly and looks identical to the unit that you remove - you should be fine.

A lot of people use MANN for the oil filter as thats who apparently manufactures it for BMW. For about $14... I prefer the BMW one. Its only 3 times per year for me.

Yes, the one I got fits my car, I checked the part number against the car model in the store.

The K&N filter I bought seems to be much higher quality filter than one in the link Billfitz posted. Anyways, another question. I have 2 brand new unopened jugs of Liqui Moly 5W-30 Advanced Full Synthetic oil (10L total) they're even BMW LL-98 approved (the rating before LL-01, same stuff I believe), only issue is the jug states they are meant for high mileage vehicles. Can I use them on my 428i with 30,000km (19,000 miles) ? I rather use stuff I have sitting around than to buy more oil. This is the expensive liqui moly full synthetic oil too. I tried to do some reading, and the general opinion is I can use them, it'll just be wasted addictives since new engines doesn't leak oil or anything, any thoughts from you guys ?

I always go OEM for oil stuff. For oil change stuff, I just get them from fcpeuro. I haven't done the replacement thing yet, but I've heard it was stupid easy to do and for something you change so often like oil (compared to other parts anyway), this is a very good use, I believe.

All these posts with their O-ring leaking is due to the owner's negligence, this K&N oil filter is for RWD N20 only, not N55 or any xdrive model. These guys all own 335i (N55), not 328i/428i (N20).

You do you man.
I'd rather pay 15 bucks per oil change AND get OEM (aside from first time which is ~$60) than pay whatever filter+oil costs for aftermarket stuff.

But maybe that's just me.

Assuming that the engine is the exact same configuration as that found in the 328i, it will be exactly 5 quarts, 10 ounces for the RWD model; 5 quarts, 3 ounces for Xdrive. Xdrive models have a more shallow oil pan to make room for the front diff/axle assembly, hence the reduced capacity. I have a cheapy measuring cup I bought from Wally World to add the last 10oz. When I run the oil check function after I’m done, the level is spot on.

Thanks man, I didn't know xdrive made a difference, but mine is rear wheel drive, so it works out 5 quart 10 ounces is exactly a 5L jug.

Exactly. If you are able to buy a 5L jug, you’re golden.

Ya, I have 10L of Liqui Moly high mileage full synth sitting around at home, but I decided to buy 5L of Pennzoil platinum euro full synth with the BMW-LL01, that's the rebranded BMW OEM oil used by the dealer apparently. Since my car only has 19,000 miles, I'm just going to stick to OEM oil for now.

The LL01 Penzoil platinum euro is only 5w30, there is no aftermarket LL01FE 0w30 nor LL14FE 0w20 from any vendor at this moment.

Don't lose sleep about getting LL01FE. It's only different from LL01 in that it has lower HTHS, which is for improved fuel economy, not better engine protection. If anything LL01 or its equivalent will give better engine protection, and advanced oils like Liqui Moly can give even better fuel economy than LL01FE. After my maintenance agreement ran out I did my first oil change using Molygen 5W-30, plus Ceratec additive. My gas mileage went up by 2 MPG. How much of that increase was due to the Molygen and how much the Ceratec I can't say, but I'll take it. Interestingly it's rated LL01, but the HTHS is even lower than BMW LL01FE.

There is a 5w40 as well. I started using it after my first oil change.

Did my oil change yesterday, everything went smooth as silk, reset service, took it out for drive to the beach and back, checked oil level on idrive, right at max, no issues with the K&N oil filter what so ever, as I expected, the people who had leaks are because they don't read and used this filter for their N55 instead of N20 where the rubber rings are not the same size and leaked all over. For my N20, I confirmed no issues. Only regret is I probably didn't need to do the oil change, the old oil came out goldish color and looked new, previous owner said he did the oil change just a few months ago and barely drove, having no records of it, I didn't have a peace of mind and just did it again anyway, better safe than sorry I guess. Car felt exactly the same, no "extra acceleration" or anything.

I was looking for 0w20(LL14FE), 0w30(LL01FE), 5w30(LL01) as offered in BMW twinpower brand, while 5w40(and 0w40) is not offered by BMW.

It is true that 0w40 and 5w40 are both listed as accepted grades for F30 engines as shown on owner's manual.

Maybe not where you live, but 5W-40 is offered by bmw here because its more suited for the local climate.

Interesting info, there is BMW 5w40 for motorcycle, so the same can be used for N20/N26?
