P02CD Check Engine Light

Hi Folks,

Mine seemed to have thrown a code yesterday, P02CD. After doing some research, seems like it is due to either a worn injector or dirty injector. Giving it the good ole college try before I replace all of them for preventative maintenance, I decided to give a fuel system cleaner a shot in order to see if that can break off any issues or solves any problems. Given the fact that my baby has 93K on the clock, I wouldn't be surprised about the injectors getting dirty and/or failing. Has anyone else had something similar to this? ODB Information below:

Yes. Had it on injector #4.

They're $100 or less new at BMW right now.. grab a few. They were $480+

25 minute job.
Needs coding after swap though.

FYI 13538506548 is between $80-$100 at the online BMW parts dealers. Just bought 2 from BMW of Morristown shipped free.
My last injector cost me a lot more.

Is your car tuned at all? I got a P02CF (cylinder #2 instead of 1) after JR's stage 2 tune at similar conditions to you (lower RPM, 0% engine load). The CEL went away after a few engine starts indicating that it only tripped that threshold once. JR tuning said to just monitor if it happens again. I did have a case where I was getting other codes due to JR's tune exceeding thresholds and they sent me a new tune to lower the output in that range.

Here's my freeze frame data from the event:
Engine Load = 0 %
Engine Coolant Temperature = 194 °F
Engine RPM = 1,125 rpm
Speed (OBD) = 23.343 mph
Intake Air Temperature = 102.2 °F
Mass Air Flow Rate = 11.8 g/s
Throttle Position(Manifold) = 84.706 %
Run time since engine start = 2,973 s
Barometric pressure (from vehicle) = 14.649 psi
Voltage (Control Module) = 14.6 V
Relative Throttle Position = 94.902 %
Ambient air temp = 78.8 °F
Accelerator PedalPosition D = 14.51 %
Accelerator PedalPosition E = 14.51 %

If you get any chance to see injector balance, you can monitor what the DDE is doing to each injector to have a smooth engine running.

The reason it is sporadic is because it is condition dependent. A lazy injector is allowed a +4mg/stroke of fuel adaptation before triggering the error. An oddly leaky injector will be pulled to -5mg/str before triggering a different error.

This was my cyl #4 before and after putting in a new injector and coding it. Result was perfect balance again

How did you calibrate injectors 1, 2, and 3 to get tighter values? Or did they just come in after #4 was replaced?

Awesome. I might get that. I really would like to find a way to get BMW's factory program to use. But so far the research I have done is way over my head.

The others came in when number 4 was replaced. Other cylinders' deviations were compensatory.

Ran two cans of seafoam through two tanks of fuel and these are the measurements I have right now. I will probably end up replacing all four at some point soon. No check light for 1000 miles so far though.

Nice!

I kept my bad #4 injector, I wonder if cleaning with additives would recover it.

20K miles later and now looks like Cylinder 3 is being naughty (P02D1). The original one mentioned above never came back. Im going to run two tanks of seafoam through it to see if this helps, otherwise ill replace cylinder 3. Dealer quoted 500$ for labor for all 4. Parts look like their are about 250$ a pop. New one on ebay seems to go for 190$.

It's really simple to do the labor. Unbolt and pull out, by hand. The coding of the injector is what can cause most to not DIY it.

Sounds good. Do you think an injector with 116K will be that easy to take out? I know other ones are usually a pain in the ass to the point they make special tools to extract them.

Yea. It should be just wiggle left and right and take out.

There is no real pressed surface. The top mount presses the injector onto the copper gasket.

Fair, good to know.

Is cylinder 1 towards the radiator and 4 towards the firewall? Or reversed?

Did you need the special socket tool that TIS recommends? (https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...lines/JhUdZKaP)

Do you wash your engine often? Water should not be getting in there to cause rust.

Glad it's out!

I would make sure the inside of that bore is clean before new one goes in. Don't forget to enter the new injector's calibration code in ISTA.

I never wash my engine for that reason. The rust had me alittle worried, but looking at the copper washer, you can tell that there was a darn good seal. I'm chalking it up to rainly weather that we get here. Close to 6 years and 115K, I'm sure some mositure got in. : maybe?

Cleaned the best I could, but didn't have any bore cleaning brushes on hand. Shopvac'd as much as I could and gave it some wiping action.

Programmed the new injector codes and bleed the fuel system after I did it. Took it for a drive last night. Drives great. Hard to explain but it feels less clunky. Thanks for all your help.
