335d/435d Common Faults

Hi,

I'm currently in the process of selling my e92 and looking to move into an f32 435d. As with any car, I presume there are a number of common faults on the platform, I'd appreciate if you guys can give me some pointers on what to look for when buying.

I've read about the ongoing egr cooler recall, are turbos still problematical on the 35d?

Thanks,

Russ

Not heard of any turbo issues, main one by far is EGR.

Thankfully the EGR cooler cost is covered by BMW in its entirety isn't it?

I'm not aware of any significant issues with turbos.

Tengocity ran his F31 335d with a DMS map to around 119K miles, with some track evenings thrown in, without any problems.

Steering racks, suspension top mounts, knocking/leaking adaptive dampers. Any suspension or steering related noises really. The racks aren't cheap.

Also check that the car gets up to temperature properly. Cars that don't warm up due to a weak thermostat don't regenerate the DPF, which then gets blocked, so then people fit a new DPF for £££ or worse, cut the DPF out which is illegal. All for the price of a thermostat.

Very good point. I was just thinking of engines.

My F31 has had two replacement steering racks, air-con control valves and condenser, and numerous front suspension items, all under warranty (BMW insured extended warranty is a must IMO).

The 30/35d engines are generally strong, EGR/cooler excepted, but there can be weak points elsewhere.

As already said, main problems to look out for are the EGR valve and cooler (current recall) and the steering rack.

When you test drive one listen for any clunks from the front suspension over rough surfaces, a clunk on the drivers side is often from the rack. Also while stationary rock the steering from side to side and listen for a clunk as this is very common on these cars.

Bad rack

Good points, more generic across them all rather than specific to 35d so defo ones to check.

The way it handles is a common fault as is the near 1750kg weight, the nasty rattle on step off affects them all as well and an over confidence in the cars straight speed will lead to you to being dropped like a bad habit on the motorway by that M4 you're tailgating.
