Cool Front suspension bushings bad at 50K miles

At 51,000 miles a trusted garage tells me my 2014 328i front bushings are 'coming apart' and that's why rough ride over pot holes. $920 including required alignment. Sound right to you folks (can't say guys anymore).

Yes about the bushings but that price seems very high.

What bushing are they replacing? Are they just replacing the bushings or getting new arms w/ bushings?

For a complete front end bushing replacement, $900 is pretty darn good.

We already asked him this stuff.

I replaced lower control arms and thrust arms. The arms where about $200 each pair and then the alignment was $250. I installed the part so just the parts and alignment was well over $600.

So depending on what the OP is replacing and if they are having a shop do the work, I could see it being that expensive.

How easy did the arms go in and out?

Easy enough to do on jack stands or necessary to have a proper lift?

I did my LCAs with Farkie on quickjacks. Easy to do on stands as well.

The wishbone/LCA and tension strut/thrust arms are pretty darn easy for RWD models, although you'll occasionally want a helper to hold the steering wheel still.

For xDrive cars you have to disconnect the drive axle from the knuckles to get the tension struts out, RWD you don't and it's way faster.

For both RWD and xDrive, doing it on jack stands is just fine. As always, having the proper tools (sockets, extensions, appropriate height torx sockets, ect.) makes things go more smoothly.

Did them on jack stands in the driveway. They came out easily, just need to make sure you tighten them with a load. I have a rwd.

They did replace the "Upper Control Arms." Said the "Thrust Arm Bushing" was worn, but could not just do bussing because they were out of round.

Did you ask for the old control arms back? I'm no mechanic but that sounds like a way to just sell you another part and be lazy. It's a bit easier to just swap out the whole control arm.

The fronts are straight forward but the rears arn't always easy. The rear wishbone struts have tension and the bolts BMW now use make it difficult to align. I had a hard time re-building the rear suspension struts getting the bolts to align. I found if you start from the top struts it was easier.

Jim
What does "coming apart" mean?
Does your trusted garage have a camera?
Consider doing nothing.
What are the consequences?
