Adaptive cruise control

Is it possible to add adaptive cruise control to a 2017 440i that does not have it?

Yes, but its a massive amount of work, few have done it successfully, many get part way through the work then give up.

Yes, I'm in the process of doing it at the moment. At a minimum you'll need:

* DSC pump
* ICM
* ACC radar (plus bracket(s))
* front and rear wheel speed sensors
* front bumper wiring harness

I've installed everything and coded my car, the only thing left is to build a custom harness that connects from the bumper to the ICM and power. Cost so far is probably around $1800. I drive in stop and go traffic everyday and it is so sweet in my X5...

How much does it cost if you order your car with it new or CPO?

Oh Wow! I didn't realize there would be so much to it. I knew it was a $1,500 option from the factory but I thought it would be a matter of adding sensors to the front of the car.

Thanks for the answers guys. Right now I'm not driving much, but my situation could change forcing me to drive to Boston daily. If that happens I'll consider this, but until then I think I'll follow others progress and cross my fingers for them

BTW, what are "DSC pump" and "ICM" ?? How many hours to you think you have in this?

The things we do for something we don't want on our car to begin with and then want to add later....lmao

I'm not doing that at all... I just drive this car as-is until i decide to buy another new/used car that probably have all this or thing I want most.

DSC is dynamic stability control, aka the ABS brake pump which is responsible for the automatic braking that occurs. ICM is the integrated chassis management module which controls many aspects of your cars driving dynamics including safety features like the airbag. You'll need both of those from a car that already has ACC, I found them for about $400 each. Did the wheel speed sensors at the same time which took like 5 minutes per wheel.

I gladly would have paid for this option had I purchased my car new but I saved a grip buying it used and I'll have it for many years so it's very worth it to me. ICM took about 2 hours to replace (have to remove the center console) and the DSC was pretty straightforward, took about two hours along with brake bleeding. I installed the radar last night which again took about 2 hours because the front bumper comes off but I also installed a splitter at the same time.

I've spent much more time doing research and finding parts than actually installing them lol.

Back when I lived in a southeastern Boston suburb and commuted to Cambridge the traffic was horrendous. You might be better off taking the train from Providence or South Attleboro if you live north of Providence. Then you won't have to try to add adaptive cruise control.

If not, consider a commuter car (something relatively basic with adaptive cruise control; you won't be able to use the power of a 340i on congested highways anyway) and save the 340 for other times and weekend use.

not worth it. i estimate $3-4K in costs and labor. i miss is dearly on my new 440i, first time buying off the lot and not just ordering to spec.

I’ve said this before.i tried to find ACC on a convertible. I must have looked at 100 cars. None had it. Apparently Germans are not big fans. On Bmw,it’s a stand alone option. On MB and Audi it’s only available on the top option package.

And on most Hondas and Toyotas it is standard equipment and not optional....

Retrofitting something after the fact is very, very, VERY expensive in most cases.

It's about $1800 for parts alone and that's with a used DSC, ICM, and radar. I bought the steering wheel switches, wheel speed sensors, brackets and bumper harness new. I only need to build the last harness now, I should have it running in about a week

Hopefully, you'll make a "how-to" thread. I'd love to see how you did it. It's modding to the extreme.

Here's mine. It works fairly well.

I've been thinking about that but to be honest I just followed the TIS (newtis.info) when it came to replacing the components, everything you need is in there. One issue I had was that the old DSC didn't recognize the new wheel speed sensors so until I replaced the DSC and FA coded the car with 5DF I had a ton of errors on iDrive, 6 warning lights on my cluster and the steering was heavy as fuck. I figured that the car couldn't determine what speed I was moving so it didn't know how to adjust the stiffness of the steering.

I just ordered the connectors I need to build the last wiring harness, should be here on friday. I'm not happy about having to expose the ICM again to run wires but removing the center console wasn't really that hard. Second time should be much faster

I just completed this retrofit! Finished the actual hardware installation over the weekend, ran the wires from the radar to the ICM last night, then performed the ACC start-up routine in ISTA tonight. Everything completed successfully, took the car out for a drive and voila, it works!

I don't know how feasible a full write-up would be, the hardware portion of the install is pretty much all in the TIS. I definitely would have some pointers for people who want to do it themselves but a fair amount of the process is just being able to figure out what goes where. You'll need to know your way around e-sys and ISTA, I doubt a single step-by-step process would be the same between two cars when it comes to the software.

Sorry I know this is a later ping, but how did you manage the Sensor Start up procedure in ISTA? Did you use a dressing mirror or something in your garage? I haven't tried to start it yet since I am swapping out my older version FRR (ARS3-A) with the slightly newer version that came with the LCIs (ARS3-B).

I’m interested in doing this!

Not sure what parts I may need but my car is a 2019 440
I already have active blind spot detection, side and top view cameras, speed limit info (everything listed in the drivers assistance plus package except Active Driving Assistant).

Have the drivers assistance package and parking assist.

My car also has collision warning so if I have the sensors, radars, etc what else would I need? Was hoping it was just a coding issue or maybe a part are two. Any advice/help would be appreciated!

Thanks
