AFe B58 catted downpipe, 900 miles review 340i

Having gone through VRSF catted to Evolution Racing catless and back to OEM, I decided to try the AFe catted downpipe because it was cheap from x-ph. Running with AFe Magnum Force intake and BM3 stage 2 ACN91.

Installation - as with most downpipes for the B58, it's easy.

User Experience
The good
- it's really light, when I received the packaged it felt like there was nothing inside
- I'd say the build quality is better than VRSF
- no drone, does make the exhaust noisier but no where near the VRSF or ER downpipes
- better mid range power
- cheap compared to other catted downpipes
- better throttle response

The not so good
- leaves me wanting more because I know there's more to be had haha

Conclusion
If I was never going to install any tunes this would be the downpipe I'd get because I need more mid range power for road courses than top range power but since I do have BM3 stage 2 I ordered the catted ER downpipe from x-ph because it's on sale.

Will upload logs because I install the catted ER downpipe

Did you get a Cel with the AFE? It's a ceramic 400 cell ... wondering how it will hold up compared to the steel mesh and the HP difference from the ER.

Let me know if you want to sell it PM me

I don’t have to worry about CEL because there’s a feature in BM3 that turns it off.

I won’t be on any dynos but I’ll post logs for both downpipes.

Was there a foul smell with the catted afe downpipe? I've heard catted can smell bad after a while. If so would catless be the better option

If someone weren't running a tune, I wouldn't recommend this downpipe. With catted DP's, you usually get what you pay for, to get that no CEL guarantee.
Good to hear the aFe DP is treating you well. Looks to be a solid value.

For non-flash tuned cars, I recommend Active Autowerke or CG Precision as they offer no CEL guarantee

if the car is flash tuned, CTS turbo catted is the best option in my opinion. Great price, no fuel smell, and the flash will take care of the CEL

The Evolution Racewerks downpipe is in its own category as you are paying more but you are getting a beautiful hand made product that's almost too nice to be installed under the car

Any fuel smell, CEL or other issues running a stage 2 tune on ER catted? I would like to have the option of not relying on the tune to suppress the CEL

It's either CG/AA ($1,000) or the $1,500 (Fabspeed, HJS, Wagner) downpipes if you don't want a CEL.

Thanks! Are you running one? If yes, do you mind which one?

+1

as long as you are not getting an Ebay brand, the catted downpipe will not have a significant fuel smell. For the CEL, you need to get one of the options G.Newt mentioned or a flash tune like bootmod3

Love mine - almost hated to install it - it looked so nice I thought about displaying it in my home
