2014 N55 - Injen Intake Installed & Dyno'd
I didn't find it listed anywhere to fit the 2014 model N55 cars but I decided to roll the dice and give it a shot.
Car - 2014 335i X Drive M Sport Installation - covered in other threads but it's super simple. Took 35 mins max with simple hand tools. Fitment - pretty solid once you get the pipe where it doesn't touch the hood. In Cabin Noise - a little louder than I remember it being on the N55 E90 car I built. Nothing crazy like some of the N54 intakes though. Dyno - I did a baseline pull with the factory intake in place and immediately afterwards with the Injen installed. Nothing huge in gains but still some decent improvements along the powerband with a peak HP gain of 12.97whp and 10.78wtq. (Remember it's X Drive) Dyno - Mustang 1100 All Wheel Dyno Conditions - 76 Degrees, 41% Humidity I'll snag the dyno graph and upload it sometime this weekend. Couple installed shots.

I logged IAT temps before and after, the factory air box was a few clicks higher all throughout the dyno pulls.

Nice!
That's all good on the dyno though.. But take it outside in the hot sun and with the heat that comes off of the tarmac and I think we would see higher temps personally, perhaps not initially, but eventually. Especially on hotter days that the day you tested. Here in South Africa, it's very regularly above those ambient temps. Again, no proof here this is just what I think. Would be interesting. |

Very nice! I like Injen's design as it's a nice mandrel-bent tube with minimal bends.
Have you noticed any issues with idle stability and surging as many are experiencing with another intake? |

None of the above, I am untuned at the moment though.

Realistically, the difference in performance between aftermarket intakes is going to be negligible. But the dozens of people with pretty bad idle sputtering/loping as well as error codes with the BMS unit is a major turn-off. I'm in the market for an intake, and it's either Injen or aFe (leaning towards Injen). There might be a new aFe unit coming out, so I'm wondering if I should wait it out. |

I do wonder about the gains though as they seem quite high with no other mods. I have the BMS intake and sometimes experience the rough idle upon start up. BMS says not to expect more than 5whp wih no mods or tune. We're saying this is double that which is what I question. I've never dynod mine and not sure my butt dyno could tell 5 hp vs 11 hp but if it is 11 and doesn't have idle issues (mine didn't begin to manifest for a month or so after installation) then it's a winner if the price is right. All tests seem to point to the fact that intake mods hardly ever produce meaningful gains and it's the tunes that they're often packaged with that give the real gains since the stock units are so good. I'd like to see dyno comparisons but 11 hp , depending where it's at, is nothing to scoff at and is almost what a downpipe would give you with no tune which is what I find impressive. |

I am contemplating an intake as well. Was thinking BMS, but due to everyone having issues recently, I'm thinking the Injen may be the way to go. I probably will not re-tune my car, just wouldn't mind having a better breathing intake for a better sound, any performance gains (even minimal) are always welcomed.
Keep us informed on how it does for you (i.e. CEL, rough idle etc.). Thanks!

1000 miles on the intake so far, no rough cold start nor a CEL...yet.

Again, were those quoted numbers gains in peak figures or max gain somewhere in the rev-band? Either way, those are good results.
Take this random dyno chart I found in a Google search to illustrate what I mean. Notice how peak HP and TQ increased by less than 5 each, but max gains looking aside peak figures are significantly higher, upwards of 30. |

Thinkin I want this intake. Always loved Injen for intakes. They stand by their products too. Once snapped a bolt location on one (no idea how) and they sent me a whole new pipe. Little concerned with BMW service/warranty though.
I think this setup is perfect; pretty basic smooth bend pipe, open filter with a heat shield, and I dig the black. |
