Ultra Low Emission Zone ( ULEZ )

Just had notification from Transport for London, that from 8/4/2019 they are introducing the new ULEZ system.

https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ult...e?intcmp=26434

This means for vehicles that can not pass the new emission rules there will an extra £12.50 a day charge, this on top of the existing £11.50 congestion charge fee

This seems to affect all older BMWs and Alpinas, my B10 V8S, will now cost me £24 a day

Luckily I do not drive in London and certainly would not now use my Alpina.

Yet another nail in the classic car movements coffin

I've got a battered old 2001 Ford Focus here that struggled to pass the MOT emissions test and it's exempt from the ULEZ charge (not that I drive in London), so if they bring a ULEZ in round my way I'll just use that to drive through!

I would double check below
https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ult...m-checker-ulez

Usually only petrols made after 2005 and diesels after 2015 are exempt (euro 4 & 6 respectively).

It's Euro 4 and I put the reg in ages ago out of curiosity (because my 64reg 330d is not exempt) and there's no charge for my high polluting old banger.

And..... From 25 October 2021, the ULEZ area will be expanded to include the inner London area bounded by the North and South Circular Roads.

This is a HUGE area, and will impact tens of thousands of cars and vans. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds and in particular, how it gets enforced. Will require a vast number of cameras.

Those that still need to travel by car will most likely be displaced onto the surrounding roads and motorways, i.e. M4, M3, M25, etc, to go the 'long way round'. It's going to hugely increase congestion on those roads and likely increase overall fuel consumption - not exactly a green policy.

True, but I think the ULEZ has more to do with reducing harm from exposure to emissions, so moving traffic away from areas of high population density, which it should do. CO2 output may be worse as a result, but I imagine that some of these longer journeys will be offset by switching to public transport. It seems a pretty sensible policy to me.

Trouble is, public transport doesnt work.
for me (East London) to go to Kent, I have to go into central London Fenchurch street station, take the tube to Victoria and then journey out. to get to my sisters in kent is a 40 minute drive, by public transport its a 2 hour journey costing £35 so 4 hours with the return, plus the mile or so walk from the station to hers. great fitness routine but i wont see her very often.
If you have a business in London and yo get deliveries by van/courier the smaller companies now have to buy new vehicles or pay £100 per day. Guess what, that gets passed on as there is no way it can be absorbed, and so people dont buy and so all small shops end up going broke.
These policies are short sighted. if they at least did the same times as the CCharge but the ULEZ is going 24 hour.

By the time the ulez becomes active all diesel vehicles up to 4 years old will be ok (as eu6)
So many vehicles will be ok but as said smaller companies will be hit as larger fleets can simply swap older vehicles to areas without ulez zones
