Wall mounting Nest Thermostat

Has anyone wall mounted a Nest Thermostat using USB power instead of the boiler wires?

My plan is to wall mount using the supplied base and run a USB cable straight back through the wall behind into the garage. I’ll then plug the USB cable into an adaptor plug and plug it into a free socket in the garage to give the Nest permanent power.

Will this work?

Dont see why it wont - as the stand is powered via the base and usb.

The only issue is the size if the hole you will need to get the micro usb though.

You only need a 5v feed via the 2 cables that connect to the base... so would be easier with a twin core cable to a 5v converter to power it.

Where is the hub? If close by would be easier to power it off that.

Thanks

The hub is mounted next to the boiler upstairs so not close enough to run wires to the thermostat.

There aren’t any wires in the wall because I’m using a wireless thermostat at the moment.

I’ll have a look into the 5V converter.

Thanks for the replies.

Do you still get the USB cable and mounting plate with the latest Nest thermostats?

Looking online it seems to suggest you don’t?

I did it too. Works great and Ive never had to reboot it and chase where the cable goes (into our old chimney)
