2012 328i Rearview Forward Facing Camera
I just noticed that my rearview has a forward facing camera. I have been reading about it and found out that it reads speed signs on the roads and displays the speed limit info on your HUD or onboard computer if you don't have HUD. I don't have HUD, but can't figure out how to get the speed limit info displayed on the onboard computer. Some say that the option is available under Settings/Info Display. But, I don't have Info Display as an option. Any suggestions?

Speed limit info is only available if you bought the option. It did not come standard with navigation.
I would have gotten it as it was only a $100 add-on, but it required the $2100 driver assistance package (side cameras and parking assistant) which I didn't want. It's a shame as I'm sure the navigation database has the speed limit info, but doesn't show it without the camera package to read the signs. |

Seems BMW uses the windshield camera only for speed limit info. Camera detects speed signs and a few other road caution signs and displays accordingly on HUD or cluster. Some other manufacturers use a combo of GPS database (mapping) and camera to determine speedlimits. For instance my parents Caddy XTS seems to use both. Where they live the car starts out showing 40MPH limit when they leave their home, but as soon as first sign appears it switches to 35. Seems the mapping database is wrong for that street and the camera corrects. I think BMW waits until it sees a sign. And yes, you need the speed limit info option for this to work.

Also, you may need the KAFAS camera which only comes when you order the driver assistance package. The Xenon light camera may not be sufficient. For the gory details, see the following: Quote:
I don't know if anyone has tried this on an F30 or not. You'll can start by adding 8TH and maybe 8TD to your VO and then VO code the affected ECU's (HU_CIC, KOMBI, and maybe ICM and FEM_BODY). |

Do you have 8TH and/or 8TD in your VO? I still think (based on the previously referenced thread) that even if you have the KAFAS camera, you will need to find someone to provide you with an FSC code to enable SLI. |

KAFAS camera is only installed in vehicle if you have lane departure warning and/or speed limit info.

8TH and 8TD are the speed limit option codes. But, if you don't have SLI, then you won't have these. Again, this is mostly moot as you would need an FSC code to enable SLI anyway. Last edited by Frogman; 05-02-2013 at 05:20 PM.. |

If you have the option, the camera not only reads the speed limit signs (and it is extremely accurate!) but also is the basis of the lane divergence system. It reads the lane stripes and gives steering wheel feedback if you stray from your lane (also very accurate).

DVR?
What is the possibility that the forward facing camera can record video, say the last 15-30 minutes, should you ever need evidence of an accident, etc.. I read the new nav system will have a 200Gig drive which would be perfect for this /ed
