To update or not to update? That is the question!

My 2018 F30 seems to need some software updating. I've read good and bad about upgrading software and frankly, I'm uninformed in this area. My independent BMW mechanic plugged it into the "mainframe" or whatever you call it and said the car's current integration level seems to be 2-3 years old and there are numerous updates to get the car up to the most recent integration level. The car was originally leased by someone else for nearly 3 years (doubtful they were concerned about software updates) and I purchased it about 3 weeks ago. Should I have these updates done? And, is this something I can do myself or does a BMW tech need to do this?

Additionally, there is a specific SIB and ISTA fix that my car needs for an issue with the fuel tank ventilation valve (helicopter noise) that was released about 18 months ago. Is there a way to get just this update completed? Or will I need to get the complete integration level up to date in order to fix this one issue?

Any help is much appreciated and I thank you!

JB

Updates are OK if you don't have coding or a tune. If you do avoid it.

I personally would have it updated for the most up to date software unless it had a tune. You could re code the vehicle to personally how you prefer it since the vehicle is new.

If you're not flash tuning the car, I say by all means update it if it needs it. The people that have issues with the updates are the people that are tuning their cars.

It's not just tuning, it's also coding, which is a lot of people. With each update some coding features disappear, so you can't just re-code them. There's also the theory that BMW uses software updates to make it impossible for anyone other than a BMW shop to do some repairs. Paranoid? Maybe, but just because you're paranoid doesn't mean no one's out to get you.
