I had a 440i for 3 years and now have a 335d...
I like both but mpg is close... that's mainly down to the 440i being really good.. I do like the xdrive but the car does feel heavier. Main thing for me is setting off at junctions etc in the lovely northern rain.. I'm thinking I'll go m440i next, when they finally arrive.. got the xdrive and right power from the start.. The 335d is great and such a good all rounder... but as fast as it is, it actually doesn't make me want to put my foot down.. the 440i did.. |

All the Rwd cars need is a set of PS4S tyres and in anything other than snow/ice you have masses of grip. Leave traction on and you would need to be really silly to end up in trouble, mine has never surprised me, even in situations where other Rwd cars (s2000) have, though that had Potenza ditch finders.
I've had a 330d xdrive and now have a mapped (320bhp) Rwd 330d. My experience with the xdrive would stop me getting a 335d, awesome off the line but poor turn in and the nose feels very heavy, plus the standard suspension on xdrives is really poor. My choice would be the 340i, though if you get one with Bridgestones I imagine they would be pretty frustrating, especially in the wet, even though the 340 has less torque than my 330d. The PS4S transforms the ride and grip, I went Potenza to MPSS to MPS4S and the 4S are worth every penny and more, and IMO a necessity for a powerful RWD car in our ever wetter climate. |

Previously had the 335d xdrive, drove it 1 mile to the train station and 1 mile back, daily. Nothing went wrong. No issues whatsoever.
Now swapped over to a 340i, same journey. Again no issues. Just a loud cold start for the first 30 seconds of the trip. |

440i all the way. I did low mileages in mine across three winters, no issues at all. Yes, I stayed in during heavy snow, but would have done the same in a xDrive. I'd want winter or all season tyres on either to be untroubled by snow.
The 40i lets go very progressively. In the third winter that I had mine, the tyres were well worn to around the 4mm mark, on wet, cold (sub 5 degree) days, it was very easy to get the back to dance a bit in a very controlled way. When the tyres were meatier it always felt very grippy. Noise and REFINEMENT - 40i every single time. Don't hamper yourself with a diesel unless you have too.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, a lot of helpful info.
As mentioned the 335D's are looking a bit cheaper at the moment and more in budget, but I am so tempted by the sound of the 440i. Another question, do all of you use premium fuel that have these cars? Premium petrol for the 440i and premium diesel for the 435D, if so which brand? |

If a diesel doesn't get up to temperature it just gets full of sticky carbon and gums up the engine and controls. It will be a maintenance problem for you. What everyone above said is correct. Look to petrol , hybrid or electricity for such a small distance.

I'm just coming out of a 430d, doing 9-10k p.a. and it hasn't skipped a beat. Brilliant car and engine. But. If I could go back 3 years, I'd probably go 440i. For my mileage or less, there's nothing in it financially, and you get the pleasure of the B58. I am now belatedly getting that fix via a 540i. Just get the petrol, you won't regret it.

The problem with the comments on diesel doing short trips and never having any issues, etc., are we talking cars with age and higher mileage? Or newer, low mileage cars?
You won't necessarily have any sign of issues, until one day it becomes obvious there is a problem. The only way to see any potential and impending problems, is to look inside, like in the inlet manifold and EGR valve, see what gunk is building up. Talk to the recovery guys, they are a good source of details on short trip/cold use of diesel engines. |

I'm a big fan of the 35d and ran them for 10 years until my miles dropped. But for sure low miles = petrol. Doubt you'd see much difference in mpg with your commute and at low miles it makes little difference anyway. No need to waste money on premium brand fuels in my experience. My M3 is perfectly happy with Tesco Momentum 99 or Sainsburys 97RON if no Tesco nearby which is usually about the same price as standard diesel (not because I'm penny pinching but because I see no benefit). No need to put anything but 95RON in the 40i but you'll get the intended power from 98+RON - so if you are worried about grip perhaps super unleaded when it is dry and unleaded when it is wet or just use the accelerator pedal as intended. Really shouldn't have any worries about putting the power down as it is a well sorted chassis with all the stability controls to keep you out of trouble...

Luckily I own more than 1 car and for the very reason you mention I try not to use the 330d unless it’s gunna travel far enough to get up to its correct running temperature. If I’m just taking the cat to the vets a couple of miles up the road I use a petrol car.

By contrast, the 440i sounds incredible - smooth, but with a spine-tingling howl when you push it... And although it lacks the diesel's immediate pick-up, the surge when you go past 4000 revs is intoxicating and addictive. Six months down the line - and having spent a winter driving the 2WD 440i - I'm 100% sure I made the right decision. It's true that in the wet you can only use 50-75% of the power, but the fun I've had with the car compensates for that many times over. And the icing on the cake is that I'm averaging over 36mpg, astonishing for such a powerful car. |

For example, at my local Esso here in London it's 132p for unleaded and 143p for super, whereas yesterday I was up in Suffolk and managed to get super at 128p a litre from the Tesco in Martlesham. That's a substantial difference.

For short journeys you describe 335xd will do around 30/33mpg at its best. DPF wont be an issue as they can regenerate at any speed and any temperature. They are really good at that.
But being realistic 40i is a better bet. Short journey not an issue, probably less maintenance then 35d and more fun I would say for sure. |
