Well as today is 9/11 the day I came out a coma 20 years ago, to what I thought was a film, from a bad RTA I didn't really feel like playing with her

But tomorrow is a fresh day and I have been looking around the forum and googling everything so my to-do list is growing by every click of my mouse

But as I'm planning on playing with the software first BMW's software update page says their is an update so I've downloaded it, got it on a mem stick ready, but a couple of queries

I was just planning on hocking up an external PSU to the posts in the engine bay while I was playing with BimmerCode but reading up on the update I see a few mentions of having to have the engine running for the at least 20min update I'm curious if this is cause you need the engine alive rather than just the ignition or if its to do with currant drawn during the update?

Secondly what is the best way to update the map thats stored?

What is the best way to find out what optional extras were ticked?

I mean I have the HK speakers (cause the logo is on the grills), I dont have electric seats cause it has levers, my wing mirrors dont fold in

But how can you tell what was ticked e.g yes its an M sport but does it get M sport suspension or the adaptive M sport suspension?

I am enjoying her even more now

Stick your vin into https://www.mdecoder.com and it should tell you. It'll at least give you the codes, and if you do a google you should be able to find the relevant PDF catalogue which can give an indication of what packs were likely specced on it.

Well think I've managed to find a rear parcel shelf/roller blind thing on Ebay so hopefully when it arrives she'll be back to standard

Still doing my research on software/map updates from what I'm reading the iDrive software should update itself from the media I plug in but map updates require an FSC code?

Anyways I'm now thinking about the chrome grills and other bits you can change...

So to go black or carbon?

+1
It's a bloody great metal box, the weight saving from fitting carbon bits to it is probably equivalent to taking a packet of sweets out of the door pocket. Just looks silly in my eyes. Too "wannabe" but ETTO

Well if I add on the votes from social media its 10 - 6 for black so guess gloss black it is

Plus its a lot cheaper for larger items

Plus this is my "sensible" every day car so black will look a lot more in keeping with that

Now I've decided I can google properly whats out there and go from there

In my opinion, many "mods" detract from the overall appearance & less is more.
Classic example being the tri colour grills that scream modded

Yeah trying to do just a couple of subtle things exterior wise so nothing stands out to the average peep on the street but those that know I get a little nod of appreciation if you know what I mean

Just gone for the plain Gloss Black grills without the M stripes as looking at multiple pictures and looking at my car I think the only thing that has those stripes is the tiny M badges on the front wings

Decided as its a Glacier Silver car with black trim on the outside I've got Dakota Black Leather interior I'll see what Glacier Silver like interior bits I can add to the inside so its kind of a flip inside to outside

But again everytime I google or youtube something I end up in the spiral of "ooo bet that would be good" or "could I do that too mine?" (insert face palm smilie here)

If I get a chance I'll post a pic of the bits but dont think I'll get a chance to fit until back end of next week

Random quick question...

I found my old iPod classic 120Gb got it on charge now

What should I expect if I plug it in in the morning?

Does it become another source in multimedia?

Does the iDrive controller act like the iPod controller?

Well I have an 80Gb iPod plugged in the armrest USB. Works a treat. Call up artists, albums etc via Voice command if you wish.

What should I expect if I plug it in in the morning? It should connect, charge and just work...

Does it become another source in multimedia? Yes

Does the iDrive controller act like the iPod controller? Not really, it acts as the controller but doesn't look like the iPod menu, BMW have their own iDrive interface to navigate through to select the music. Try the voice control, it can give some unexpected results though

Plugged the iPod in and worked straight away

Like you said its the iDrive menu at the side so it doesn't take much getting used to

I did remember I had a couple of music vids on there but sadly all I get is the album art work but the track plays fine, not sure if its possible

Now I have a good source of old school tunes I know I can have a play with the setup of the H&K system to get to my taste

Well finally been on a "long" run

Did my house (just north of Newcastle) to Stockton and back yesterday

Might not seem far but saying as all I've really drove since owning is to work and back, ~20 min journey at max, meant I finally got to drive for a period of time

Average fuel consumption of 49.4 MPG too was nice

And as I was being taxi driver I wasn't allowed to wait in the waiting room so I got to use something else in my new bimmer

Apologies I haven't been around much but mid November I got a trapped nerve so lost the use of my left hand

Long story short A&E checked me for a stroke it wasn't so A&E doc gave me the medical term and then said google 'Saturday Night Palsy' to understand

Well I'm finally starting to get use of my left hand fingers wrist is a little so-so but it means I might finally get round to fitting my new grills and mirror covers (weather dependant )

Also cause I've been sat around the house and the mouse hand still worked I've now got a list of stuff I fancy doing so will probably split those into separate posts for advice on specific things

Also think I've manged to alter the thread title from 'New F31 Driver' to 'Spangle's F31' cause this should turn out to be a build thread
