Anyone replaced their Leak Detection Module?
My check engine light came on the other day and it's showing code P0456, "evaporative emission system leak detected(very small leak)". I cleared the code, but it came back. Took it to my dealership and they diagnosed the Leak Detection Module has failed and want $552.37 for the diagnosis and replacement of the module and dust filter.
The modules are all of $30 to $40, and my service advisor said it was a 1 hour job, which leads me to believe it's probably not overly complicated, or really worth the $552.37 that they are quoting I've searched the forums using different words/terminology, but I haven't been able to locate a DIY for replacing the module on an F30 335. Anyone done this or know of a write up for an F30? I've looked at the E90 write ups and videos, but the parts diagrams for the E90 seem to differ from the F30.

Anyways, I believe what you're looking for is under page 160-31 Fuel Tank Evaporative Control System of the Bentley F30 Service Manual. There's only 2 things in the section. -Activated carbon canister, removing and installing -NVLD pressure switch, removing and installing If you're out of warranty, I highly suggest you get the Bentley F30 Service Manual as well as ISTA/D Rheingold. It seems like Bentley and the ISTA/D Rheingold procedures mirror each other. Last edited by Polo08816; 04-22-2016 at 06:58 AM.. |

It appears that it is a common failure on pre-"F" series BMW's, as there are many posts, write ups, and DIYs regarding replacements on those earlier models.

Parts cost: Module - $101 - https://www.getbmwparts.com/parts/in...&siteid=214672 Activated charcoal - $349 - https://www.getbmwparts.com/parts/in...&siteid=214672 Did you think owning an out of warranty European car was inexpensive? A Bentley service manual @ $129 is nothing compared to the parts cost that you'll inevitably spend. Last edited by Polo08816; 04-22-2016 at 09:53 PM.. |

Please scroll back to my first post and locate the single, simple question I asked. It is clearly indicated by the "?" at the end of the sentence. Or you can just re-read the title of the post. As far as the parts you listed, they are incorrect. The OEM BMW Leak Diagnosis Module for my car is $30.45 and the OEM BMW dust filter incorporated into the vent pipe is $54.44. I'm not sure why you are quoting me an activated carbon filter, as I never mentioned that needing replacement on my car. In regards to your DB statement about owning an out of warranty BMW, grow up.

Looks like BMW know about the fault, see similar repair on a N55 engine for an X3 at
https://bmwtechnician.com/2015/11/20...coal-canister/ Note that you must be careful to get a replacement part that will not also fail soon. |

My 2013 335i was recently serviced for this issue. It was a warranty repair, so I can't say anything about how it was done because I didn't see it. The description of the work includes reference to a procedure code: "TEST PLAN ABL DIT AT1214_TVD_NVLDII". Maybe a google search for that procedure could help, but the repair notes this procedure was one of many that might apply to fixing the vacuum leak that could arise from any one of multiple locations. Knowing how to test the leak is not trivial and selecting the right parts to fix it is also not trivial. Unless you have the right tools and you can pay for access to the BMW technical info system, I would leave this one to the pros.

I know this is an older post but I called BMW today to check on something else and they noted that my car was given a limited extended warranty of 10 years 120K miles for this Leak Diagnosis Module.
I called BMW customer relations at 1-800-525-7417 and they looked up this information with the last 7 of my VIN. Not sure if this helps. |

Did you ever see if your car was covered under the extended warranty for this part? bmw-rp.com. My 2013 shows extended life warranty (ELW) for the N20 Leak Diagnosis Module (NVLD).

I just received my letter (dtd: April 2017) from BMW for my 2013 F30 335i, extending the limited warranty for the B-ELWR 2016 Fuel Tank Leak Diagnoistic Module (NVLD) 10Y120M to 10 years/120K miles. It is not a Recall or Service Action, but rather a reimbursement for "qualifying customer-pay repairs".

Even though I heard about this (and posted it in January) I also got my letter today stating the warranty was extended for this part and they are reimbursing for costs of repairs I believe so OP should check into that.

Well I did not get any letter from BMW. But I got a CEL after I recharged the battery on my car. I took my car (out of warranty) to the dealership and they diagnosed as a faulty NLVD. It was just replaced today at no charge, but it took them the whole day to diagnosed and replaced the parts. Glad I did not get charge $500.00 plus for this. I think the SA knew what was wrong with the car when he mentioned early on that the service may be covered under an extended warranty (which at the time I have no clue what he was referring to). And yes, the 3 parts listed above are the same as what is listed the printout.

BMW should cover this, per the letter that Orion4 mentioned. I have also received this same letter - 10 years / 120k miles. Bring this up with your dealership, for sure.

I received a letter from yesterday stating that NVLD is now covered for 10 years/120k miles. You should talk to your SA about this.

someone found where's the NVLD on F30, the fault came back on my car (I first replaced the gas tank cap and it was gone for some time) now it's back.
I want to replace the NVLD as it's not covered in Canada by BMW |

So My CEL just came on with the P0456 code reading. Is the best course of action from here to call the dealer for service if this is under warranty? Never really use them and I bought my car used from a 3rd party dealer.
