B58 Engine Whine Around 1500 to 2000 RPM

Hi Folks,

I want to see if anyone has a slight engine “whine” while both accelerating or decelerating within 1500 and 2000 RPMs with their B58 engine. I can’t hear it much at idle or above 2000 as other noises drown it out.

I had my wife rev the engine while I listened and it seemed to emanate from around the exhausts headers region, leading me to think it might be the turbo. Are turbos supposed to have a slight whine?

I brought it to the attention of my dealer who thinks it’s nothing but did say they heard it as being “louder” than another B58. They had disconnected the alternator thinking it was a tensioner, which some engines had issues with based on an internal memo.

I notice the noise when I’m driving in Sport Mode more as it seems to let the engine hang around 1800 to 2000 RPMs.

Thanks in advance!

I have heard nothing like that on my 2016 340.

Turbo will do some whine, more under load than just revving in neutral though.

My other car, the Honda, started making whining noises under the hood.
About 100 miles later the alternator puked its guts in spectacular fashion.

Turbo has whining when spooling up, usually when it reaches 1.5k rpms (peak torque) the whine is the loudest

Thank you. I just don't know if the amount of whine I can hear inside the cabin is "within spec". The B58 does have some interesting engine noises and sounds. The only good thing is that my car has had no drivability issues despite the noise.

Do you hear your turbo "whine: with low RPMs when you get on/off the accelerator>

Oh geez. That must have been a bad unit from the factory. They checked mine and it wasn't an issue.

Thanks for your input! Yeah, I used to have a 335i and they had different engine sounds and the occasional blow off value swish. The B58 definitely sounds different. I'm just not sure if a low RPM whine is even normal to begin with. I get that it will make more sound when under load.

I experienced this issue on my '16 340xdrive - it was at the dealership for over 3 weeks troubleshooting. They replaced front and rear differential along with the transfer case.
