92Y vs 96Y

I'm looking at replacing my rear Bridgestone S001's (255/35-19), but I'm getting conflicting information and am hoping someone can clear this up for me.

On one of the Tire Store sites, they have five different versions of this particular size tire (all S001's) but two of them are labeled BMW. One is 92Y and the other is 96Y. The website is telling me that I need the 92Y version but I seem to remember that my car had the 96Y version on them (running different tires now so can't confirm).

Will this REALLY make that much of a difference and how imperative is it to get the right ones (92Y or 96Y)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Load & Speed Rating for the tire.

96 = 1,565 pounds load rating. 92 = 1,389 pounds.
Y = 186 mph speed rating.
BMW Star = tire variant specifically build/tested for BMW (for particular models)

Check your door jamb tire sticker. It will tell you the recommended/minimum load rating. If it says 92Y, there is no harm in going to a higher load rating of 96Y, but not vice versa.

I went through a very similar thing when i was searching for PS4S and seeing several different options with different prices for the same size tire. See posts here: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...5#post25578475

Are you definitely comparing a 92Y with a 96Y, or is the 96Y an XL, extra load?

Thank You!! I didn't realize that it would tell me the load rating as well. I'll have to go take a look.

I'm actually just trying to put the proper tires on the car, but when I realized that there were two different tire load ratings for the same tire, I got confused and didn't know which one I was SUPPOSED to get.

And then I started wondering how much of a difference it would actually make...

So I thought I'd put up a post asking the question in case anyone else had the same question.

XL makes a difference, You are comparing two similar L.I. tires at 2.5bar, in a 92Y and 96Y XL, hence my question.

What's on the car, 96Y or 96Y XL? This will make a difference to whether the 92Y is of a high enough L.I.

I found an old pic of the S001's that were on the car and they were 92Y, so I guess my problem is solved. I don't see any reason to go to an extra weight tire if those 92Y tires did absolutely fine.

Thank you for the info!!

With that info you don't need a 96Y. If you did go 96, it is the XL that is the equivalent tire for running at lower pressures.
