+1 on this.. I live in the chicagoland area also and haven't cared for an X-drive or AWD car in that matter just because I can work remote if the weather is bad.. I feel like a RWD feels more natural when driving and it barely snowed this year! I also hate that larger wheel gap of course :P

F-platform BMWs are just too numb. I'd opt for the E92 ///M any day. Plus it's not like the interior got significantly nicer for this generation.

E92 M3 any day...especially if you have the option of leaving it at home in bad weather...and I don't get the knock on the interiors either, my E92 was clean, functional and put together nicely

Now the question is.. Should I stay away from a 2008-10 E92 M3 and go with a 2011-13 when thinking about maintenance / problems?

Ms don't usually get LCI work, although I'm not sure on the E92 M3, so I would be looking into the mechanical fixes/improvements and when they were implemented. I would look for a single owner low mileage car that has been garage kept, the newer the better. That was my criteria in 2014 when I bought my 2005 M3 that had 58k on it at the time. I was comfortable in the 4 to 6k miles per year. Didn't want the car to be sitting unused for long stretches either. And I didn't want it to be a daily driver and see year round weather.

100 octane gas should cover it.

My top 2 are an E46 M3 or a Porsche 911 993, but the 993s have really gone up in the last few years. After that I would look next at a Porsche 996. They have hit the bottom and can be had reasonably and have the oiling issue repaired - engine reliability issues seem to have been exaggerated, or all the ones that are going to fail have failed by now. What about a Cayman? I don't like the center exhaust, but if that doesn't bother you, I hear they are fun to drive and decent value.

In the meantime, I'll be looking into an E46 M3 or Z3M 'vert for the weekends. |
