I was not. It was retired before I was born.

But the plane was one of my favorites growing up, as I think it's one of the sexiest jets ever designed, and when I saw the engine code for my F32, it's the first thing that popped in my head.

So on my way back from the BMW 1-Day driving class in Spartanburg yesterday, this happened:

Oh, yeah...now the fun can really begin.

Man, that analog cluster is outdated!
Did you intentionally not order the MuFu insturment cluster?

When I bought my 2015 F32 the deal was the car would have no dealership advertising.
That challenge exceeded the capabilities of the boneheads at my dealership.
I had to strip off the dealership license plate advertising etc. when I got home.

I would have taken the 6WA cluster James has in a heartbeat if it was possible on my F30. It wasn’t possible on the 2018 3-series with the executive package (ZPX), which forces you into the full-digital 6WB cluster, and I was painted into the ZPX corner because the adaptive LED headlights (552) were non-negotiable for me. I don’t really like the full-digital cluster, but I’ll live…

The dealer told me that I wasn’t the only customer who asked about “downgrading” the cluster.

On the 4-series, 6WB is an à la carte option. Nobody’s arm is twisted into accepting it.

I intentionally did not order the digital cluster. Don't really care what they look like with the HUD in the car.

The HUD does not substitute it... it just extends it. I can easily live without HUD, to me just a "nice to have" feature.
The fully digital cluster changes the whole look of the car in my opinion... making it look more like a 2018 (premium) car rather than 1990.
To me it was a "must have" and if I were to get a car without it, retrofitting it was already on #1 of my ToDo.

Anyway I was just curious whether it was intentional or just a miss.

The 6WB is definitely beautiful, but I feel like (at least from online videos I've seen) the tachometer lags. Seems like the engine sound does not match the RPMs, or is that just me seeing it via online video? Do we know what Hz the display is?

There is definitely no lag, and my 330i had an analog cluster, the digital cluster is a day and night difference. Completely changes the feel of the driving environment.

I think you'll find people willing to trade here, it's a pricey retrofit otherwise.

Might be more interesting if it was a match for the one in the Audi but as is does not bring much extra to the party IMHO.

As for the HUD my eyes are on it was more then head down looking at the dashboard. Modern tech is useful when it provides better information without having to look down; basic reason they raised the nav screen into your sight lines.

Aircraft have a s**t load of instruments many displayed on the glass cockpit but high tech is the HUD display which is now appearing on basic transport planes not just military.

Agree- if more like the Audi, I would have wanted it. Wasn't impressed enough for the cost on the 440i.

There is definitely a small delay especially if you rev/accelerate aggressively, you'll see that the needle is just slightly behind when the car shifts. It's not noticeable if you're not really paying attention but drive a new 5 Series or X3 with 6WB and the difference becomes noticeable - the current generation of 6WB is leaps/bounds better than that found in the FXX BMW's but that's not really a surprise.

Interesting you should mention that. In civil aviation the HUD is not certified as primary navigation tool as it is lacking the integrity and reliability, as well as data display required for that. It is just a convenient nice-to-have feature, which is exactly what it is in a car as well - it lifts some of the data 15cm higher, closer to the line of sight but it is not intended or designed to substitute the Primary Flight Display / the standard Instrument Cluster.
Keeping an eye on clock, RPMs, etc., you might find it is more difficult and attention-grabbing to combine 2 screens, instead of just one, even if it is 15cm lower...
I don't think improved safety thanks specifically to HUD can be proven statistically either... at least not with the state of technology we have today. But it is a promising thing, no question about it.

P.s. The HUD is unusable with polarized sunglasses

Definitely no perceivable lag! The quality and resolution of the display is also superb! I was afraid it may look bleached in bright environment and direct sunshine - nothing like it. Looks sharp and clear irrespective of the environment and selected mode.

Couldn't agree more that it is not up to the Audi Virtual Cockpit level in terms of functionality. But since the BMW analog cluster is at least 10-15 years behind the Audi analog clusters, to me it was a no brainer and an absolute "must have" for a 2018/2019 premium car.
I would have rather skipped other options, but this completely changes the look and feel of the car, as others wrote here as well.

I find that the indication doesn't lag perceptibly, but the refresh rate is slow enough that the tachometer "needle" stutters during a rapid engine speed change, like a quick upshift. The stuttering grabs my attention every time.

Fixed that for you.

Seriously though, I ordered my 440i specifically to have the analog gauges. I really don't need my car to feel like the Starship Enterprise. If there was no option but the digital display, I'd have still bought the car, but I certainly wasn't about to pay a premium for something that isn't a premium feature to me (or many others, it would appear from the comments I've read). I've seen the digital display, and my preferred look is Comfort, but I drive 99% of the time in Sport, so why would I pay extra money for a feature that doesn't look like I want it to look?

This might be the reason why the tach in every Ferrari is still analog, despite the rest of the cluster becoming digital in recent years. I think the gauges in Aston Martins were also all analog until the DB11.
