Auto folding wing mirror upgrade DIY...5 pin or 6 pin?

I've completed the left side upgrade to auto folding wing mirror. Did the relevant coding and it works perfectly.

However I'm struggling to find the driver's side mirror, as all the ones on ebay appear to be 6 pin and not the 5 pin I got for the left side.

Does anyone know what the difference between the 5 and 6 pin variants are?

6 pins is for the non folding. 5 pins for the folding.
The 6 pin will not have the folding motor. 6 pins control runs via the mirror switch.
The 5 pins routes through the FEM Body as the anti dazzle activates via the rear view mirror.
How many pins on your existing mirror and does your car have the memory seats?

The original, manual folding left (passenger) mirror is 5 pin, and so is its automatic folding replacement that works great. I have memory seats so no wiring was required, it was almost literally plug and play just with a tiny bit of coding.

I don't know how many pins the driver's side mirror uses, but I imagine it's the same as the left side?

What's confusing is there's a large amount of eBay sellers stating their 6 pin mirrors are automatically folding, but they must just be wrong.

I can't seem to find a definitive part no. for the electrically folding mirrors. RealOEM isn't much help. I've searched every part number it lists but none seem to match what I need.

Thanks

I've spent a bit more time digging into this with regards to part numbers.

I may be wrong, but I think the part numbers for the mirrors *without* electric/auto folding are:
51167285109 (left)
51167285110 (right)
For cars with "S459A Seat adjuster electric with memory" but without anything for mirrors (by looking up the vin).

Whereas the mirrors *with* electric/auto folding are:
51167285138 (right)
51167459137 (left)
For cars with "S459A Seat adjuster electric with memory" and "S430A Interioroutside mirror with auto dip"

Again, I may be wrong, but figured I'd post for reference. My RealOEM-fu is improving.

I wouldn't trust some e bay sellers especially repro part sellers , I recently bought an " electric folding dipping heated mirror with puddle light " for the wife's fiesta ,from a repro part seller .
the mirror did / was non of these things !! not surprising for £24.00 !! .it was the case I was after to rebuild the original .

always do the detective bit first and check with manufacturer part no !!

Ok, so if your passenger mirror is 5 pin. Then it is plug and play. If it was 6 pins then you need to re-wire to get it to work.
Did your passenger replacement mirror come with the anti dazzle mirror?
I would buy the drivers side based on the number of pins. You need 5 pins. Get the seller to take a photo of the pins. Also check the mirror glass is the anti dazzle mirror glass.

My existing mirror was 5 pin though, and didn't electrically fold, so that may not be a fool proof way of checking.

How can I know if it's the anti dazzle mirror glass?

If it has anti-dazzle, is it always going to be electrically folding?

I believe it is part of the folding mirror option package.
The anti dazzle mirror has a line/margin around the edge of the glass.

One thing to note is on the earlier cars the anti dazzle was on both the passenger and drivers side. On the later cars BMW only did the anti dazzle on the drivers side. I believe this was a cost cutting measure.

Curiously my existing right side mirror has what you describe.

As does my new left side mirror, perhaps it has it too...

Either way I'll keep looking. There's one or two on eBay but they're ~£200, which is a lot more than I want to pay.

200 is pretty much the going rate for a folding one. You might get lucky tho!

My first one was £140 and I just ordered the next one from Lithuania for £130, so I'm doing alright so far

Taking a bit of a gamble on the one from Lithuania, but if it isn't right I should be able to sell it on.

The first one is definitely auto folding, as it's on the car and folds when I lock it.

The one coming from Lithuania had the VIN number of the car on the eBay page, which I looked up and it did appear to be from a car with folding mirrors. Also I confirmed with the seller.

If it turns out to be BS then fair enough.

Hi,

Hoping you could shed some light surrounding your 5 pin folding mirrors. I have a set of 5 pin mirrors that didn’t power fold but replaced them with an almost identical set with a new switch and coded (now power fold). All the research I have done online seems to illustrate that ALL power folding mirrors are 5 pin? I am now wondering if this is true and if my original mirrors just needed coding / new door switch or I really needed new mirrors to begin with? As the original and replacement mirrors were both 5 pin!? Slightly confused. Thanks

I honestly can't remember, but I do recall that the electric folding mirrors and the standard ones looked pretty much identical.

If you can fold the old ones manually, with your hands, then they're not electric folding ones. I tried to fold the electric ones and felt like I was going to break them, which obviously wasn't the case for the normal ones.

Hi,

First time poster.

My wife's 2012 F30 driver wing-mirror was damaged, and we got a replacement from a breaker. Our mechanic tried to connect it today, but in doing so discovered the one on the car was 6-pin, and the replacement was 5-pin. Now none of the driver door buttons work, even when the original mirror was put back on? His diagnostic tool said "communication error" or something like that.

Has anyone any idea what may have caused this, and can it be fixed?

Thanks!

No idea what would cause this unfortunately... Especially for the error to persist after putting the old mirror back on...

I'd take it to a BMW specialist or dealer to take a look at it.

I'd also use RealOEM to find out the correct part number for the mirror replacement if you're intending to fix it on the cheap.

Thanks,

The mechanic fixed the issue yesterday. He said that connecting the 5 pin mirror to our car blew a fuse, as the pins are wired differently.

You get two types of 5 pin mirrors, one is 5 pin non powerfold but memory mirrors so passenger mirrors dips in reverse these are usually fitted to cars with memory seats and the other 5 pin mirrors are powerfold memory mirrors usually with auto dim. these both run on the linbus, I think you can rewire or modify the switch to convert a 6 pin car to 5 pin with some coding required to convert everything to linbus. Unless your upgrading the mirrors probably best to replace like for like.

Sorry to revive an old thread (I'm new here sorry can't work out how to message!)

Do you happen to remember which fuse was blown?
