I was reading the forum and some have talked about coding Auto Start/Stop off. Doesn't everyone just have an on/off button for this feature? Sorry if this is a silly question, I have had a 2002 e46 and now a 2018 F30, so nothing in between. With that stated, for me at least, I don't find it intrusive in normal slow stop and go traffic. I certainly know this is a matter of taste. My 2018 turns on quickly if I release the brake pedal and I have not had any issues with accelerating quickly from a light. If it bugs me, I turn it off and or use sport mode. I understand the potential issue of wear, but it seems there is nothing yet conclusive that Auto Start/Stop contributes to a defined issue. Is that correct? Should I be worried on my B58 f30? Thanks.

Mine can simply be turned off with a button above the start button. (and it stays off)

Mine does the same thing; it remembers the last setting. I thought that was the case, but just tested it today. That is why I was confused about the need for coding. Is this specific to 2018's or is this in one of the packages?

One thing to note is that some earlier bmw models would forget auto-start off so that you had to press the button on each startup. Clearly due to consumer dismay, later model bmws remember this setting. I want to say its around 2015-2016 years but may depend on model. I was thrilled that my 2018 remembers the setting, because i was prepared to tell bmw that one of my requirements for sale is that they code it off, but as I said I didnt need to.

I was extremely opposed to start stop and hear mostly only bad things and of course believed it would wear battery and starters faster. Also I figured the car would be very slow off the line. The clever thing is that the car starts when you lift off the brakes so by the time you hit gas you are ready to go. I learned in playing with the driving modes that eco mode turns on start/stop, but when you switch out of the mode (or start car fresh) it remembers your setting - which for me is auto off. I like this compromise that you can control the auto start/stop by the drive mode. I dont drive in eco much but it does save real MPGs, especially in a city. As someone said BMW is smart about the car not shutting off every microstep. Also, the engine off at idle seems to be a softer off than a full off and hence the startup sounds less of a battery drain. Also I believe at some very cold temperatures bmw may prevent the auto off in my experience, can someone confirm? I typically do not drive in eco if it is below freezing for a few reasons including it doesnt allow heat to work as well (on purpose)

I cant comment on long term effects but I think auto start/stop is not all bad of a driving experience.

For the last 6 months I've been using the system, mostly to see if I could a) get used to it and b) what sort of MPG differences it would make over the long run.

I am saving more gas than I gave the system credit for in the past. I'm saving about 1 to 1.2 mpg, which considering I don't have a lot of stop and go, is not bad. If I lived in a big city with real traffic I suspect one could double that number pretty easily.

However, some of my concerns about long-term wear and associated costs remain. My vehicle is a 2015 335i and I have some friends with 2012 and 2013 cars and a couple others with 2016 and newer cars. It's a mixed bag on those who use it regularly and those who turn it off. I have a lot of quick stops which have the engine shutting off for a mere second or two, sometimes less, I can't help but think that's not good for the vehicle.

Any thoughts, comments and/or experiences?
I use it all the time, in both the F30 and F15. I'm used to it to the point that i don't even notice it, there's really no need for the engine to be running if you are not moving (except for climate control reasons in extreme temperatures). I've saved a considerable amount of gas (and diesel) over time.

This is true and I am grateful for it. Some other makes don't have a way to default it to off or remember your setting.

That was what turned me off on the new Buick Regal Sportback. You'd have to turn it off each time you started to drive. (Well, that and not being able to get leather in the base model, which was possible on my 2011. Buick has been cheapening out for a while, unfortunately.)

I turned mine off and the car remembers the setting. One caveat: If you click into EcoPro mode, on purpose or by accident, the "disable AutoStopStart" will go off -- in other words, ASS will come back and bite you in the . . .

I use EcoPro on the worst part of the commute home, and I make sure to click the "OFF" button right after I select EcoPro.

My answer is no. Primarily because it's annoying.

Donut (Youtube) has a good video on the subject.

Yes, it is more gas efficient but there is also increased wear on the engine, although minimal. It is not the same thing as cold starting your engine over and over again. Auto manufacturers take this feature into account with your engine and transmission components.

It's a ridiculous feature and the way it works on BMW's is terrible. Other manufacturers have better systems (like my Mom's Bentley Bentayga, but hey it's a Bentley).

I refuse to use it.

I actually left mine on. It gives me a basic idea of my battery level since I hardwired my dash cam.

I did notice that if the brake pedal is not pressed hard enough, it would not shut off the engine. But anything beyond the sweet spot triggers the shut off. The most annoying part is when I pull into a diagonal parking spot and want to slowly park the last few feet, it just shuts off......

Yeah that's also true about eco pro not respecting that setting. Rarity use that those but have clicked it by accident a few times and wondered why my engine cut out.

I wonder how much of the fuel savings the few people who use it see are more due to them subconsciously being lighter on the gas than the actual workings of the ASS system?

I leave it turned off since it is incredibly annoying in roundabouts and parking and there's only a few stoplights on my commute. Having a button that turns it off and keeps it off is a huge plus to the car. I know some newer vehicles bury it in a menu and make you turn it off every time.

I consistently see +5 MPG in the 328d and +3 MPG in the X5 35iXdrive in the city with the ASS ON with a normal driving style and I'm lead footed.
