Buying New Rims (How Much To Install)?
Hello fellers/fellas.
Have a quick question. So a friend said he'll sell his 403's to me which I will def purchase. My question is, how much does it usually cost to get it installed at the dealership? I never ever installed a spare before so I have no idea how to do it, which is the reason why I want to go to the dealership. With sensors being included, not sure if I have to calibrate and do some other mumbo jumbo stuff lol. Im also a bit weary placing the lift under my car, don't want to risk the chance of putting it in the wrong place and dinging the bottom. Any advice on price? |

I was quoted 40 per tire at the local BMW dealership. That includes removal of existing tire from existing rim, removal of TPMS, and re-installation of tires, TPMS, balancing etc.

If you're just swapping full wheel+tire sets, I'm sure someone here can tell you how to connect your car to the 'new' TPMS (though likely you'll have to do it on the cars individually, out of range from each other, or it'll still be picking up a signal from your "old" wheels).
In other words, do it yourself. |

Shop around, my local dealer wanted almost $400 for the exact same thing you are looking for. I ended up taking it to a tuner shop and they did everything , including filling the tires with nitrogen and setting the tpms for $55 total.

If you're mounting OEM wheels that are already balanced and tires installed, I would do it myself, as someone suggested, since you don't have to do anything other than lift the car, remove old wheels and install new ones.
If you don't have the equipment/knowledge to do this, I would go to tirerack.com and search for reliable shops they work with in your area. I believe the tirerack site lists the install price per wheel at various shops. Just take it to a tire shop and have them do it. Don't bother with the dealer. It shouldn't be more than $80 to remove old wheels and replace with new ones. $40 would be more reasonable. It will take all of 15 minutes. |

I think $100-200 is fair. They have to get it on a lift and do all four tires and the TPMS, and you're easily paying the expensive labor rate. |

If the tires and sensors are installed on the rims, isn't it a matter of just lifting each corner of the car and replacing the wheels, pretty much like a flat? If the tires were roadforce balanced on the rims there should be nothing else to do. Since I'll be doing this twice a year to switch summer/winter wheels back and forth it better be easy!

wait what? you're just swapping out stock rims for stock rims? The new rims you're getting already has the TPMS installed and all that?
Find a friend who has a jack/ torque wrench/ fitting socket for the lug nuts. Should be a 30 minute job If you want to take it to a shop, i get charged $10/rim for installing tires/ mount/ balance so $40 in total. a shop to just swap out old rims for new rims, they shouldn't charge you more than $20

Just swap them yourself. Loading them in your car, driving to the shop, and waiting for them to do it would take more time Plus you have to tighten them to BMW spec (88.5 if I am not mistaken), which a random tire shop most likely wouldn't do.

Will any lift jack work? I have a 2008 honda pilot that came with a jack. I know the BMW has those little rubber "stops/squares" for the jack to be placed on. Not sure if the pilot jack will fit and I dont want to force it and ruin those little rubber stoppers.

You have three options: 1) Go out and buy the necessary equipment (floor jack and jack stands primarily); 2) Borrow them from a friend; or 3) Take it to a tire shop (as has been noted already, it shouldn't cost more than $40 assuming TPMS sensors are already installed, wheels are balanced and tires are mounted). If I were you I'd go with option #3. If you were inclined to do #1 or #2, you probably would have done it already! |

It's really as simple of pushing a couple buttons and drive 1/4 of a mile or something. WHen I put my new wheels and tires on the message popped up and I hit reset and it was done. Literally a two button press that took a couple seconds. For the record, I used my jack (cost about $100 for a nice one) and the BMW adapter sold by BMS and the other adapter that you screw into your hub to facilitate easier mounting from BMS ($15 or so). It's about a 30min job if you don't know what you're doing with non shop equipment. I just mounted my wheels. I couldn't break the lugs loose (I didn't have a breaker bar or impact driver), and was afraid of damaging the wheel by trying any extremes to loosen them. So I made some calls and found a local tire shop that said they would mount them no problem (I found shops that quoted me $15 but I had to leave the car overnight, and others that quoted me $80 - not sure of the thought process behind that price). It took 20min~30min and $25, but my wheels are perfect now. No damage done, and all the lugs are tight as can be. Although I may end up buying a jack & impact driver in the future just for easier access to clean both the wheels and brakes...
