Hey there yall,

I’ve been noticing lately that when I come to a stop, it seems like there’s a clunk or something similar when my 8at shifts into 1st. The more immediate the slowdown, the harsher it is. I don’t think it’s slippage of the trans, so I’m thinking maybe trans/diff mounts? Maybe even driveline guibos

I use bm3’s transmission tune, that’s the only thing relating to the trans itself. Transmission fluid was serviced back in 2020 at about 50k mile, at 64k now. I have not done transfer case but I don’t think it’s part of the problem, just relevant to mention.

Has anyone had a similar issue?

Any updates?

I’m experiencing something very similar. If I come to a complete stop and slowly engage the throttle it seems ok. But, if I don’t completely stop and switch from brakes to power at very slow speeds I sometimes get a weird clunky re-engagement thud.

Sort of. I topped my fluid off as if I was doing a full trans fluid flush.

I let the car get to 30-50c for the trans fluid temp, opened up the fill plug and added more until it started to stream out.

Plugged it up and drove around and the clunk was almost eliminated. I notice it still going from 2 to 1 but it’s a much smaller jolt if that makes sense

I used the exact same fluid when I had my trans serviced. Not long after my trans failed. Many stories similar to mine using that fluid. I suggest swapping to OEM fluid ASAP.

Thanks for the heads up. I’m at 72k miles, maybe I should have the trans fluid changed?

1000% Use ZF OEM trans fluid with the 8HP.

Update: Engine oil change has almost completely fixed the issue. Clunky transition is basically gone.

The car is new to me so I’m still feeling it out. After reading many viewpoints on oil change intervals I had decided on 15,000KM to start with. This one was done at 13,000KM because I wanted my snow tires changed out. Now the car is running better than ever. All the responsiveness is back at all speeds.

I’m dropping the interval to 10,000KM and I’ll go down to 8000KM if needed.

So no major updates as I haven’t done much since the post. The clunk is still there after I topped off the fluid.

I plan on doing another flush when I move into my new place back to oem.

I’ve flashed the bm3 transmission tune back to stock for the mean time to reduce any additional strain until then

So quick edit: it’s actually 3 to 2 not 2 to 1. I pulled the trans adaptations off BimmerLink. Anything look weird? I checked mounts and bushing when I was under and they looked fine but didn’t look at the drive shaft so could be there as well
