335/435 Active Autowerke Exhaust Installed on 328

After extensively looking for a review or video, I haven't been able to find anything on an N55 Active Autowerke (AA) exhaust being installed on a N20/N26... so I figured I'd be the first to post this. I wanted to do a 335-style exhaust conversion and had been waiting to come across a good deal on a 335 M-performance exhaust. Obviously, a 335 exhaust is not designed or intended to be installed on 328, so I wanted to purchase a used one in case anything went wrong. I came across a good deal on an Active exhaust and decided to pull the trigger and take my chances... If it can be done with an M-performance exhaust, why not an Active Autowerke?

Installation was pretty straight forward... I did it myself in about 30 minutes with a sawzall and ratchet. After cutting and removing old muffler, prying off the original rubber hangers, transferring them to the AA exhaust, clamping, and installing new diffuser... the tip and diffuser outlets' alignment was a little off (as expected). I corrected this simply by buying a longer muffler clamp and bent/tightened it accordingly. It came out perfect.

After driving around with it installed since December, I can say I'm happy with it. The 4'' black tips look much better than MPE's 3" tips. I wanted an exhaust tone that's louder and deeper than stock, but not too aggressive (pesky neighbors). I would argue that there is no difference between Active's exhaust tone and M-performance's. Both have the same pitch and burbles. I got a great deal on it and for now it suits me. At some point I plan on installing a catless downpipe, but all in good time...

I came across mine on eBay and bought it immediately. They've been out of stock for a while now, maybe you can try emailing someone at AA and ask if they're releasing any soon.

Spoke to AA last week and they replied that they are working on a new exhaust version and should be released shortly.

Thank you for the review, unfortunately this exhaust has been unavailable for the last year.
AA are working on a new version but no ETA for the release yet

Sounds pretty good. I still think AWEs exhaust and mid pipe sound the best for these cars.

However wonder what a 335i AWE or DINAN exhaust would sound like on a 328i. I think those look the best.

Picked up an M-Performance style dual outlet diffuser off ebay for under $100 and ordered the exhaust from x-ph.

I only drove it for about 20 minutes to work today, but my initial impression is that it is definitely louder/deeper at startup/idle than the M-Performance. I'll give it some time to break in more before I offer a full review.
Congrats

mhauser How has the exhaust been? And mike@x-ph.com I'm planning to do this as well just because I hate the asymmetric look of the 328i. Any drawbacks from doing this to my 2015 328i?

I just did this install as well - heres a step by step DIY video to help.

You will need to find a way to step the stock exhaust up from 75mm to 80mm

Great video, thanks for that. I definitely would need an exhaust shop to put it on for me. How has the exhaust been since you put it on?

Pretty good - still need to go through and build a step down connector for the exaust as well as fix the exhaust leak. Ordered up some steel to make a resonator to fix the drone and boominess and experiment.

I used to be pretty timid about DIY until I decided to modify and repair my Mini Cooper - most difficult job I tackled in my garage was changing the clutch.

I actually made a POV driving video to help other people decide as well.
