I'm confused by your statement, because the list already includes an 8er M

F91 M8
F92 M8 Convertible
F93 M8 GC

edit: nvm, looks like you edited your post lol.

M= Money= Marketing aka revenue for BMW AG. Unfortunately, it’s how it’s done these days.

No. The product list is exactly the same as it would be if they had instead decided to start off with the M5 at G80 and gone from there. The choice of codes has nothing to do with the choice of which products to produce.

Now, whether the M brand is more diluted by the addition of the new models this generation (which is really only the X3 M and X4 M since M8 picks up where the M6 left off) is another discussion entirely, and probably best for a separate thread. Objectively though, the real sprawl to the M brand is all of the new M Performance models coming this generation. Every single product line appears set to gain an M Performance model (some gain two where diesels are sold). You won’t see this fact exposed by a chassis code list though, since M Performance models just use the same code as the other models in a given series.

It will be built on CLAR, yes, like all Gxx models.

With a modular matrix, most everything is flexible so no vehicle is necessarily based on any other. Going by spy shots, it will have a shorter wheelbase than a 3 Series. The model lineup should be the same as the 3 Series though, except there are currently no plans for a proper M model, unfortunately.

What the hell does using up the F chassis model designations have anything to do with "dilution of the M" brand?

I can't wrap my head around what you're on about. These two things aren't related at all.

Do you really think they sat around in a meeting and said "We should really try to use up the rest of the F chassis codes before moving to G" and someone responded "Well I guess that means we're going to have to product a 2 series active tourer M car"

The chassis codes are dictated by what they produce, not the other way around.

Yes. In fact, it will be the first implementation of 3/4-series version of CLAR on the market, as opposed to the old Z3/Z4s that were the derivatives of models already on sale. Mechanically, G22 will be its closest relative.

Yeah. More likely, it went like this:

BMW HQ: "Let's use G for the next generation platform vehicles".
Some M nerd: "D̶u̶d̶e̶s̶,̶ ̶w̶t̶f̶Meine Herren, you're leaving a whole bunch of F numbers unused!"
BMW HQ: "You M people are so smart, take them for yourselves."

The latter is the sedan which is currently only in China but which is rumored to be coming to other Asian nations and some European nations as well. To avoid clutter, I didn’t add the sedan/coupe descriptors to any model. In a manner of speaking, you can think of those as the Series defaults (sedan for odds, coupe for evens).

No, unfortunately. As you can see from the model list, the 2GC is a UKL vehicle, and BMW will not be doing UKL M proper vehicles for the foreseeable future (at least through the “G” generation, we can assume). The top model will presumably be an M235i xDrive M Performance offering.

A Coloradan can dream.

I'll still likely get one and just use my set of winter Blizzaks.

It will be interesting to see what the G80 will look like and perform like, compared to F80.

No new i designations make me think BMW isn't serious about their upcoming 12 electrics.
