I've been driving BMW's nonstop since 1988 and I've never heard the of an OFHG. But then again, I've never had an oil leak in any of my BMWs over the years. Maybe I'm the lucky one.

Good luck to the OP on getting his car fixed.

I'm genuinely surprised at how many folks here don't know what OFHG is. I am not a car/DIY maintenance person at all, but just being a member of this forum over the years I learned what OFHG is (and no, I have not had it replaced on my car).

I guess you're blind or you never really owned them that long.

Right on the first part. I'm blind. Actually, since I haven't had any oil leak problems with my BMWs, I never paid attention to those posts.

Wrong on the second part. I'm a keep and hold BMW owner. My first was an '88 528e that I bought new. I drove it for 9 years and gave it to my son who kept the 528 another 6 years. I got my '97 540i and handed it down to my son after 9 years. I've had my current BMW, an F30 for 8 years and plan to keep it indefinitely. No oil leaks ever on any of them.

I have them serviced on schedule and I drive them pretty gently.

...and that's not all! I had a 2003 540i from 2006 until it crashed in 2012. No oil leaks or major problems in that one either. My wife has a G05 X5 and we are lucky with that one too. I may be the only one with great luck with several BMWs with lots of miles over lots of years. I feel very fortunate indeed.

I don't pull the coolant flange from the front of the head, and I don't remove the intake manifold. Edit: I also clamp the hose off the heat exchanger so I don't have to drain coolant or oil.

The front bolt gets loosened with a flat E10 wrench (Stahlwille) or alternatively a short E10 1/4 socket (Stahlwille) and a 1/4 breaker bar. Once it's loose, I use an 8mm ratcheting wrench (Craftsman [Gearwrench]) to extract the bolt. If I owned a ratcheting E10, I might try that, but alas... Also note that the Snap-On E8/E10 combo wrench is both too long and too angled to fit.

The middle bolt is a straight R/R using a convention E10 socket in either 1/4 or 3/8 drive.

The rear bolt gets removed using the 1/4 swivel E10 (Snap-On) [now also available as CTA 2476] by going between the 1st and 2nd runners on the intake with a long 1/4 locking extension.

Everything gets torqued back to spec with a Stahlwille 730/5 - 725QR

Don't mind the fact that I also had the valve cover off this N52 to replace the eccentric shaft sensor for the Vanos.

My 328i has almost 260,000kms on. I have done this job twice already and it looks like I have a leak again. None of the jobs lasted more than 2 years. What gives? I am wondering if there is a go-to brand of gasket. Any advice? Oh, here in Calgary the BMW dealership wants 82 CAD for the gasket. Mind blowing.

OK, on my two attempts I was not able to torque the front lower bolt to spec. I have a socket that is 25mm long and the Mickey Mouse flange will not allow a torque wrench to fit. A shallow socket is on the way so I am hoping I can torque the bolt this time. Also, the bolt under the exhaust manifold can only be torqued with a kinked swivel. Who knows what torque you get even if you set your torque wrench right.
