The stalwart BMW 3-series stands up to a new challenger, the Jaguar XE.

Road and Track have gone ahead and done one of the most obvious comparisons of 2016, one that the British/Indian brand are certainly more then happy to be involved in.

Here are some interesting tidbits from the review

Quote:
The 340i's minimalism can strike you as severe, even Soviet, but the XE takes cabin cues from the XJ flagship. It has the same curved rim extending around the dash and doors, rising to surround the driver.
Quote:
The Jaguar is certainly bouncier, a pup to the BMW's old-dog nonchalance. The XE romps into corners, leaning into turns merrily, though never actually heaving over.
Quote:
The Jag's steering is better than the BMW's. The small, three-spoke wheel has a firm connection to the rubber, with a decent measure of road feel, whereas the Bimmer has lost its former, famous sparkle.
Quote:
The BMW's throttle response is acute, no matter the mode, facilitating a friendly dialogue with the car around every corner—a little more power to push wider, a little less to tighten. "Man, the Germans have just got this stuff so dialed in," says Prince.

How time has changed, now that BMW excels with its powerful engine but gets beaten in handling. BTW that jaguar is so much more sexy than a 340 w/o m tech package.

Did you not read the article? They said repeatedly the 340 was the better handling car. AND faster. It also won the comparison.

Yeah that jag looks so much better hands down. For this type of car I'd take that over anything else.

Until you get to the rear where the design falls apart IMO. As for the F30, it's not a great design nor is it a bad one, it's just clean and simple and works. Like we say, BMW is the jack of all trades, master of none.

IC dials looks like that of a ford fusion, yawn.

prefer the aggressive styling of the F-chassis m-sport especially with m-performance goodies.

Just wait until the XE gets the new Ingenium straight 6. The question will be who has the best turbo straight 6. Not to mention Mercedes is coming out with a straight 6 as well.

Also, read the article, the BMW pulls out a W.

Who are they bullsh...ing?? The BMW has far more space than the Jag especially in the rear. The Jag is a 2+2 whereas the Bimmer is a real 4-seater. in short, always try the car and do not rely only in magazine comparisons...

The Jag looks like a Volvo from some angles. Not a fan.

So, the Jag was AWD. Curious how the review would have been had they actually compared apples to apples (either get a rwd jag or use the 340 xdrive).

Of course on dry back-road twisters a RWD will deliver a more enjoyable driver's experience.

Either way I'd have to choose the 340.

About time, considering the drubbing the pre-LCI 3 series got at the hands of the XE in motortrend's review.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-3YFTFLmcfk

Not that I'm into compact sedans but from the two I'd still take the Jag for its gorgeous design and exclusivity. The 3 series is a great car that does everything right but there's a couple of them at every turn and the Jag just looks classier and more upscale. IMHO. Contrary to what people say about JLR's reliability I've had a wonderful ownership experience so far! No problems whatsoever. The negative Nancies probably have sore arms from all the reaching they've been doing just to justify their purchase and/or belittle Jag!

I love the Jag but the deal breakers for me were:
1) No manual box
2) No handbrake (EPB's are a pet hate of mine)
3) No iDrive... try using a Touch screen on the move
4) No BMW straight six!!
5) 340i saved me at least £10k on the XE S (probably more)

For me personally it's no contest but I can see why the Jag would have real appeal to some!

The Jaguar lacks the decisive finesse, the kind of programming logic that comes from many years of engineering work.
This is the basic foundation to the difference to these cars.
The 3 is a evolution, created from previous top notch cars of generations before the F3*.
And it's made from a company which knows what's it's doing.
The Jag, looking at it with some experienced eyes, and having a background with testing alot of cars in this segment, it just falls short.
The Multimedia thingy is a mess, the handling of the UI is not logic, and the Jag is just not a polish product next to the bimmer.
It is "fresh", but not "new", as the tech inside this, comes from Land rover and other inhouse stuff.
I'm not saying it's bad, but next to the very best, the Jag is falling apart, you have to be Brit, or be very keen to have something other does not have/want, to choose this over other premium brands imo.
I guess i'm just sick to see the bashing BMW are getting in here, and this Jag is supposedly the next big thing, what a joke!
