Orange check engine light after getting service at dealership
Hey guys...just brought my car in for 51k service where the dealership ended up performing an oil change and replaced the engine air filter. I got my car back same day and after driving off, notified the orange check engine light come up on the dash. It went away the next morning and it came back on just now (Wednesday). Reached out to the dealership and they want to charge me $190 to diagnose the problem which wasn’t there prior to me bringing the car in for service...I maintain my car pretty well so I know they must’ve done something to trigger the light.
When I go into the system control, everything shows good and no errors or maintenance. Is this a glitch in the system or is there something more to it? I’d hate to bring it in and waste another half day to get my car back, and worse them charging me $190 for something that they possibly could have done...is there a way to code it out if all systems are showing okay? |

The car's internal diagnosis system barely scratches the surface of possible problems. One free app that works surprisingly well is Bimmer-tool lite. It even finds problems that my Foxwell NT-510 can't.

I wonder if it could be related to the engine air filter. Either the technician didn't reassemble the air duct correctly or cracked it somewhere downstream between the air box and the charge pipe.

There are at least four potential problems that could be the result of a screwed up air filter replacement job. There are at least twenty issues that might set off the CEL indicator that won't show up in the iDrive diagnostics. You need a code reader to see what they are.

Honestly you should have immediately turned around and went back if the CEL came on after leaving the dealer. At that point it would have been clear the issue was likely due to the work they just performed.
Anyways as others have said you need to scan to get the actual codes if you want to try to self diagnose, otherwise you will need to take it somewhere... |

A good service manager wouldn't screw you over like that. Don't get mad, get even. When you get the BMW survey for the oil and filter change give all 1s across the board. That will impact his paycheck. Then move on to an indy for your service work.

True. They said they’ll take care of that inspection fee. I’ll be bringing it in Monday.
