I bought a 2013 320i xD with 200k miles on it.
It had an annoying sound on engine, but it was 5000e cheaper than normally would be, so we thougt what ever is it, we can fix it.
But the problem is, we just can't locate it.
We have used stethoscope, few expret have listened it.. we just
don't know what causes it.
The car runs great & no fault codes, it its just annoying. We are amateurs, so we can take the engine off but can't tear it apart, so it would be nice to know what causes it so I could give it to someone and say "fix it"

- timing chain and things changed 6 months ago. Chain is thight. No whining sound. (oil pump chain not changed!)
- no annoying sound on cold start. Starting to hear 1minute after.
- its worst at idle. fades at 2500rpm

Couple of videos, maybe clearer when under car. At the top, injector ticking sound is loud and it is not the sound I mean. It is the "kalkalkal" sound.

Maybe we should take "spark" off one cylinder at time, if we could pinpoint what cylinder it is...

I think the engine sounds normal. I think the sound comes from either the injectors or the HPFP?

I have heard few other n20 engines, one had same sound but not as loud, others did not have that sound at all.

Maybe i should do another video on cold start so it would be clear what i mean, because the noise comes only after a while.

Sounds completely normal direct injection noise to me

have same 320 xdrive not diesel and it sounds like that cause direct injection.

My 320i f30 n20 MT sounds somewhat the same. I can hear it clearly in the interior and only when you put some load on the engine. The more load the louder. When warm it is a little bit more quiet. It sounds like it is coming from the bottom of the engine somewhere near the flywheel.

Can you make a video underneath the car and revving the engine a bit like I did?

What does it sound like under some revs or load?

Have you checked your torque converter bolts? They should be 56nm if I remember correctly.

The N20 is one noisy ass engining.

Mine makes a strange noise once warm, almost like it's knocking up until 2500rm but I have great oil pressure and no issues driving or faults. I've been under it trying to locate it, but it's a mystery ha
