My 435i GC was built 12/2015 with NBT evo, iDrive Pro/touch, Hi-Fi, Big screen, yada yada. Not the low end model. I know it already has 4G support, but I got the letter today telling me my car's eligible. So I'm wondering why does losing 3G affect me?

So here's my guess -- on my car some or all of the BMW Connected services must still be using 3G. Even though it has and uses 4G for other voice/data.

So this technology upgrade might be a firmware update that enables Connected services to also now use the existing 4G in my car, and/or a small/cheap swap of some BMW Connected 3G HW component for a 4G equivalent...

If so, the eligible batch of upgradeable cars might all be cars like mine, first-gen 4G enabled cars still using legacy 3G Connected services, that can be upgraded to be fully 4G, to support 4G-only Connected services going forward.

Good point. Nonetheless, the eligible car owners are able to upgrade free of charge. So might as well call up the dealership and have it upgraded.

I don't see how you have iDrive 5 EVO but no touch controller (touch screen for 2017 3 Series was unavailable); that's kind of its thing and they actually revised the iDrive touch controller specifically for the iDrive 5.

Also, the "EVO" or Evolution endorsement signifies the implementation of a 4G LTE telematics connection.

For reference, my vehicle is a 2016 MY and have a 4G LTE connection with OTA regional maps update. So, I don't see how BMW went back in technology for the subsequent model year 🤷🏻

Yep, that's what I've got. So I I'm good to go. At least until 5G takes over.

Thanks!

Well then I guess we will have to pay for the 5G connectivity upgrade. That is the problem with smart cars, they get dumber as they age and thus have to pay to keep them smart. At least my last dumb, but fun car, a 5.0 mustang, never needed any connectivity…..

I don't see how, iDrive 4 was discontinued in the 2016 model year and below.

I give up.. Good luck with all that.. 🖐🏻
Lol...I give up too. I was searching online for the interface of ID4 and ID5, got mixed results that matched my UI screen. But if it's true what you said...then it is rather odd. Because while some matched what you said, some didn't. :S

My concern here is that when flashing the entire vehicle the DME will also be locked in the process.

I had a 2017 440 GC with ID4. It was a base model with zero upgrades, so it had the small screen and old iDrive.

BMW doesn't make it any easier. They have to be the only auto manufacturer that will CONSTANTLY change things in their cars, even throughout a single year's manufacturing cycle. Left over old parts make their way into newer cars, odd combinations of features show up all the time depending on the month the car was manufactured. My stripped 2017 440 with a build date of 9/16 had so many pre-LCI parts on it, I questioned whether or not they stuck a B58 in an old chassis.

You are kind of right but the proper answer to three elementary questions will narrow it down; do you have a big or small iDrive screen, your location, and your vehicle's model year; that's all I need but even those simple questions are perplexing a few here.

They all do that, using up all of the old stock before using the new. The exception would be when the old stock was superseded because it was defective.

There was an old thread about this. Pre lci f30 were 3G. Bmw had sent these letters a while ago and owners had an option to take money (I think it was $150) or have 4G retrofitted.

So used car buyers, you may not get the letter and may not get 4G if the previous owner(s) took the cash.

I have an LCI with 3G...

So it's wrong to say that only "Pre-LCI came with 3G."

OK didn't know they sold low spec lci f30 in US. OK it's possible. Here is the specifics from the LCI guide:
Quote:
UMTS reception (3G) is standard equipment in the 3 series lci. The 3 series lci is only equipped with LTE reception (4G) in vehicles with the optional convenient telephone with extended smartphone connection (OE 6NS).

This is because the all LCI updates apart from the B58 engine were included from MY2018 for the 4 series I believe. So in your case they did just stick a b58 into a pre-lci chassis for the 2017 cars. I was told this info from multiple dealers when I was shopping around for a cpo 440i last summer. For 3 series all the lci stuff was included from MY 2016 and then for MY 2017 they updated to Idrive 5. This is the case for the US cars, I am not aware how it was all done in other countries or regions.

I have a 2017 340i with the Technology package (ie. bigger idrive with nav connecteddrive and bmw apps and the bigger rotary controller) and I received this email saying I was eligible for the upgrade. Called my service advisor and was told that it would be a software update for my vehicle so I'm assuming the LCI cars with the bigger screen and rotary controller may already have the hardware capable of 4g but when launched originally in 2016 the systems were still working on 3g, hence the reason for a software update. That is just my thinking, but will confirm on Thursday when I drop the car off for service if we have not found an answer by then on here.

Anybody know if these kinds of Idrive and connecteddrive related software updates will lock the DME? Was thinking of tuning to BM3 stage one after my warranty runs out.

I too have the tech package, but '17 440i. AND I'm thinking about BM3 stage 1 as well...so yea, wondering it'd affect tuning if anybody knows.
