Thank you for this post, is very informative. And CONGRATS! For your 100K!

From your Fuelly information I can tell you don’t floor it constantly. I plan to do the same with my 2016 328i and get to 100K without major issues.

I'm sitting here with a 2014 328 with an N20 engine and 68k miles. I was toying with idea of selling before my 7 year extended warranty is up given the known issues with the N20. But, for every horrible story there are positive outcomes like yours. I, too, maintain my car properly and I love it. Mine's an M-sport with DHP, Dinan Shockware, and go flat tires and most every option and I got it new and picked it up in Munich. It is a blast to drive. Anything that would make me as happy as this car would be $40-$50k more than I can get for a trade in. Even if the engine is ruined by disintegrating guides, the cost to replace the engine is still cheaper than changing cars. Based on positive stories like yours, I think I'm going to take my chances.

Here's hoping for many more trouble-free miles for both of us and all N20 owners who are choosing to "love the one your with".
Thanks, and glad that I could inspire you to reconsider! It is a shame that the failures are so random without a solid known cause, but as you said, I'd rather spend $5k replacing the engine rather than spend another $30/40k on a new(er) car. Hope it doesn't come to that, but that is the route I would most likely go rather than discarding an otherwise solid car because of a failed engine.

Thanks! I don't routinely get a chance to floor it in NJ traffic, but I do enjoy sport mode once in a while. I think these cars were engineered to take much more of a flogging than most people think so it is not easy to really "abuse" them.

Is $5k a good estimate of what a new N20 would cost? $3k engine, $2k labor? I'm pondering a buying a 2014 F31 with 76k miles - it's a good price and the specs I want, but the current owner (now 2nd) doesn't know if the timing chain guides were changed prior to his ownership (2 years). I'm going to have a PPI done, but I also want to prepare for the low probability that I could need a new engine at some point...

Speaking of...has anyone put a B58 into an F31?

@triax37

$5k is a good number to budget for, should you need a whole new (used) engine.

Half that if you catch the supposed failure early and get all timing chain components refreshed.

Flooring it once the engine is warm is kinda a must. Abusing is flooring it in Sports mode from a cold engine, all the time, not changing oil when it’s due, not using proper oil, etc.

I floor mine when the engine is warm, you know the drill: engage sports mode, floor it and start speaking German with Bavarian accent LOL

Flooring a BMW is not abuse. Abuse is not ensuring the engine is warm before engaging a Sports mode, not using good gas, not using good oil, not doing proper maintenance, letting your brother-in-law drive your car...

How else is the exhaust going to be clean if the car doesn’t get floored once in a while? How are you going to know whether the frame is Ok unless you get to high speed?

Agreed, which is why I wrote "abuse" in quotes.

I agree on the flooring it part, i read somewhere from a poster on this forums said to keep carbon buildup's, take ur car in 3rd, 4th & 5th gears, run the RPM's at a steady 4k-4.5k, in any of the gears for maybe 15-30 secs at a time. Idk if this has been working or the fact i have been running it in high RPM's on open freeways, but my exhaust tips are super clean nowadays..

At least here in Europe, BMW are literally drifting their cars in their official car ads, so I agree that they're probably engineered to take far more of a beating than 95% of owners give them. Flooring it once in a while is a far cry from abusing the car, as long as it's at operating temperature

161,000 KM today on my 2012 328i RWD F30. Only one "major" repair (last week), not including a new thermostat (2020)-- I had the oil filter housing gasket replaced (minor weep). All fluids up-to-date, and she runs great.

Definitely not. I spent $5K+ on my 2012 Nissan Maxima in the last YEAR before cutting my losses. Impeccably maintained, but suddenly struck with a slew of failures ranging from the belt drive, to the alternator, and even the timing chain.

Want to throw in the year before that, with new tires and a wheel bearing...that's another $2.5K...

Plus at least another $3K or so in other random maintenance like oil changes, spark plugs, ignition coils, brake pads, rotors (front only), radiator & power steering flush, transmission fluid change, filters, etc. Comes out to over $5K per year spent keeping it going in the last two years. Prior to that, it was absolutely rock solid. Guess it hit the designed lifespan at some point.

Finally gave up on it at 115K miles. And now I'm here.

Thanks for posting, gives a lot of us new F30 owners peace of mind for the long haul.

Congrats! Took you a while to cover those last 5000 km from last year (see your post #20 in this thread from 02/2020 )...I'm guessing you didn't drive much in the pandemic.

I am averaging $4150 (Cdn) per year on regular servicing, consumables and a few small repairs. I guess if you want to play you gotta pay.
