Am I crazy? Thinking of selling my 435xi
Have had my 435xi for four months and put just under 1,600 miles on it so far. It's a weekend car as I need a 4 door for work. Problem is that it does not fit the daily driver requirements an it's just so so in the fun to drive category.
What I'm contemplating is to sell or trade for an '07 or '08 MBZ SL55 AMG. Value for both is close and the SL55 has a drop top and 510hp. Yes, they are heavy but the hp makes up for that pretty easy. Before anyone says that they are 6-7 years old, I prefer the round headlight style that stopped in '08 and you also have to remember that they stickered for $130,000 + The 435 is cool looking but just doesn't give me goose bumps when I go to get in it. I've thought about modding it with some aero bits, springs, wheels and such, but in the end, it's not going to be THAT different. Am I crazy? |

If you aren't feeling it then you should probably test drive some other cars. I'm not sure about any SL but to each their own. If you want something fun to drive and want to save some money get a M235i and order the limited slip.

This was originally ordered for my wife to replace her '02 e46 but the seats ended up giving her neck and back pain. She has had neck surgery and ended up having a metal plate and screws put in to fix the issue.
Being the good husband, I took the car and ended up getting her a 535xi with Multi contour seats which she loves. Was going to take a bath on the 435 if we just traded it so I figured I would keep it. Have been looking for a third car for a while any way and hoped that this would fit the bill. |

Yes, you're crazy, but if a SL55 AMG trips your trigger and you can afford the financial hit go for it.

The issue still lies with your expectation out of the car, not the car itself. Being disappointed that a 4-Series doesn't give you "goose bumps" when you get in it was your first problem. However, as you mentioned...it is indeed very cool looking.
Once people start accepting these cars as tarted up grocery-getters, they'd be a lot happier since that's what they are. In that regard, the 435i fits the bill for me perfectly. An M4 would have been better yet, however it was not out in time. |

AMG definitely knows how to make an engine, so you will enjoy the SL55. I miss my CLS 63 very much - that car was also heavy, but the Germans are very good at hiding weight, and it had 507 hp, so it made up for it. Good luck with whatever you decide.

The SL55 feels really sluggish for the 510hp it has. Have you considered a E89 Z4 or is that too small? You can tune the N54 with bolt ons to upwards of 400hp. In that little thing, it'll be a lot more zippity than the SL.
You're going to look really dated in the 08 SL. The 09 front end redesign is where its at anyway, a lot of people revere that front end as more attractive than the current model. How about the M4? Best of luck on your search. |

A Mercedes SL is not a performance car, but a powerful car with a 3 pointed star to say "Look at me". I really hate the way Mercedes designs their cars. Every one I have driven including AMGs makes me feel 10 years older than I am.
A 4 series is for driving connoisseurs who have the money to buy a no-compromise driving machine. Although, if I was going to buy a 2 door 4 series I would have waited a year to save up more money and gotten an M4.

I personally wouldn't take one of the older AMGs without a warranty.
I was shopping for a used CLK55 some time ago because of how much they had depreciated, and then found out none of the major insurance companies would write mechanical breakdown insurance on AMG.. how is that for a red flag on expected repair costs How about Porsche (997 turbo?) |

I think your definitions of "driving connoisseurs" and "no-compromise driving machine" are a bit off. Or you're trying to be funny.

Why don't you just get a 2010 M3? Then you can have a 100k car for 50k and have all the power you need to get goose bumps. It has 4 doors and you can code it and mod it to your liking. The MBZ is nice and I've had them before, but they were the only car that MBZ could classify as sport. All their other cars are really more luxury (IMO). But at the end of the day, it's about you and what you feel better in. You did the same for your wife ( which I hope she gets better from the surgery) but you have a chance to get what you want now.. If I didn't have kids and just had purchased a 328, I'd buy it. I miss my tuned 335.
