No because I never bring my car to the dealer for service.

LOL. I do not either. I have had enough disappointment from incompetence from simply taking my car in for first 3 no-charge maintenance intervals. Between dirty work, spilt oil, wrong oil, rushed job/poor workmanship, that developed huge distrust. I wish I never took my car there in the first place. Now I change my own oils and filters and do my own maintenance. Invested in Quick Jack, so any job is now easy and readily accessible. $1500 may be steep, but has paid itself over many times!

I would if/when I take my car to one. The OE stuff has friction modifiers in it; I'd want pure lube.

Find a good indy shop, OP. I think there's an online listing 'bimmershops' or something like that. Hopefully you'll find a decent one.

Also, many parts you can install easily yourself after going through the agony of learning how to get to them...but $100 of tools could save you a good 80% the cost of keeping your car if you're willing/able to study up a bit.

I have been very lucky with our dealer for my 3 BMWs and found they do a good job. Most of the folks that I know that have BMWs also have had good luck with this dealer, so for us I don't mind taking the vehicles there when needed. Yes I know they charge more, which is why I also use an Indy shop when needed.

Now I have a bunch of kids and need a van for family trips and for my Chrysler family van, well that is another story, that dealership seriously sucks. They have made enough of a mess on our van for all of the cars combined.

I used to, as I wanted to ease the pain of being shafted whenever I took my M5 in for a service/inspection.

This has been my experience too. My local BMW dealership is pretty good and I've never had an issue with them. Their sister Toyota dealership across the street? Not so much....

From a price perspective, considering all the indy shops are 30+ miles away, don't have loaners, and charge the same prices as the dealership, there is no incentive to use the indy's.

I'll happily do it myself if I had the time. I had access to a DIY garage I could use, but COVID put an end to that for now.

Same here, the only time I go there is if I need a part right away, I would never ever let them touch my car. With my E60, I didn't even go for the recall.

The dealership can chortle my balls. If I can't do the work myself, I'm at my Indy shop.

Dealers in Miami and Indiana charge $99 for 4-6 bangers (oil change). All Indy shops that I’ve spoken too are higher. Dealers are good for certain things but not for $120 cabin filter changes.

No kidding...the one and only time mine has been to the dealer was when I had some seriously confusing A/C issues going on. I asked them to change the cabin filter while it was there thinking it would be $50 or less. They ended up fixing the A/C for free (just needed the coolant topped off) but the cabin filter was $190.00.

Some things are great deals. $99 oil change out the door aint so bad. $350 to install MPPSK, sure, why not. $2300 for brakes?!?!?! HELLS NO. $450 for and air and cabin filter?!?!?! HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLS NO!

BMWs are SO easy to work on. Brake jobs are quicker than on any car I've ever owned. There are certainly some things I won't and can't do at home, but just about all maintenance can be done in the garage with a couple ramps.

Stealers....$450 for engine and cabin air filters, I mean this is just highway robbery BIG time, ugh. As you stated, in general cars are easy DIY.

Finding that out myself...

Definitely a few large issues I won't touch, but working on these is not nearly as daunting as popular opinion would have you believe.

what are you trying to get serviced?

the f3x cars are pretty easy and straightforward to work on. Nothing has taken me more than 30 mins to an hour.
brakes, spark plugs, oil changes, filter changes, etc.
