I go to my dealer (..a dealership that has earned my business about 10 times in the last 12 years) and tell them that I want to trade up or down. My salesman turned Sales Manager turned Sales Director does the rest. The service that I receive from him is unmatched. I think that the most that I've ever had to come out of pocket is $2,000.

I did not do my homework and fully understand all of the configuration options BMW makes you order to get what you want. I would prefer, a couple of different levels where they bundle more into a single configuration.

Example: standard seat has good back lumbar support yet next to nothing for supporting thighs and legs. Looks like you need to order a M package to get a better seat.
Contact multiple dealerships in your area and even outside, tell them what you really want and ask them what they can offer. You'd be surprised how much different dealers' responses would be. When I had to trade-in my 3 year old e90 that was still under warranty and free maintenance with BMW, value offer from my closest dealer came 20% less than from a dealer 130 miles away and that dealer offered me additional $2,000 off for my new purchase! Would you take a drive for extra $5-10k?

Agreed, mostly all German cars have it there now.
